Engine Oil Level Monitor

Just had a warning message that "Engine Oil Level Monitor System Fault" - car recently serviced, low mileage & on first year of LR Warranty+Assistance, so took it to main dealer. Not put on diagnostic but technician advised that would need a new oil level switch... and that it was in the sump so necessitated 2 days off the road! All should be covered by warranty, and dealer was very helpful - only problem was that I have to wait a month before they will have a loan car! They say there is no risk as no sign of oil leaks, and I asked them to note on the job sheet that the delay was by them.
Rather makes a mockery of paying a high price for LR's own warranty if they can't organise quick work & loan cars, but I suppose that even with a dip-stick most owners only check oil level every few weeks so maybe it's not a big deal?, and I can't help wonder whether the extended warranty work is paid at a lower rate than normal servicing/repairs and therefore gets lower priority by dealers?

FWIW, I fitted a new sump to my D3 in about an hour. I can't imagine a D4 sump is a whole lot different. Rolling Eyes

I'm not sure why it has to be off the road for two days. Worth asking the question? Thumbs Up

I was told that the sump had to be put back on and left to "cure" overnight. It made it sound as if there was some form of sealant that had to set hard rather than a gasket?? Annoying thing is that if it's just a short job then it could be done without a month's potential window of risk! can anyone confirm for certain - it's a SDV6 3.0 (2012).

Personally I'd be ringing the dealer and saying..."I'm not sure if it's connected but I was accelerating up a very steep hill this morning and out of the corner of my eye I'm sure I saw the oil pressure warning light come on." Thumbs Up

It's a brave dealer that leaves you in a position whereby you cannot check your oil level - especially after they are aware and have logged the fault.

Thanks Tayaste, I take it a formed in place gasket would take curing time as indicated by them?, and is a reasonable method?
Riccarton - my feeling was it was more than "brave"!, but unless a warning actually came on I'll just have to trust their advice, despite having my reservations!
Anyone know if dealers are paid less for work under the extended warranty than normal repairs?

The D4 oil pressure light does not work that way though.

Anyway, this is not the dark ages when it comes to curing times. What are they using, wattle and daub?

Thanks Robbie - so how long does a gasket (whether fipg or otherwise) actually take to cure? I don't want to push them, then find it hasn't cured & been checked properly & all the oil leaks out as a result!!! I suspect it's a case of having to trust the dealer or take my business elsewhere if there is a clear view that it could have been done more expeditiously:-)

Sorry, going slightly off topic now but I'm curious......how does a D4 oil pressure switch work in that case??

My understanding of an oil pressure switch is it is triggered by a lack of pressure i.e. very low oil level with oil pushed to back of engine which is revving hard so drawing in air (booting it up hill with low oil)!!

What is the D4 switch reading?

The FIPG used on the engines we make is a two pack which cures quicker than single pack. We allow 45 mins until filling with oil and cold testing the engine .. For hot testing the engine we allow 24 hours for a complete cure although it is usually cured in under 12 hours

Thanks Taytaste - so it sounds as if they're probably trying to ensure they carry out a thorough test after full curing, which is difficult to criticise!

But as woolmeister says, you could do with questioning why they need curing time if microcat says different gasket type

Taytaste - yes I agree; but if I push them & then something goes wrong, we know what they'll say! I suppose a gasket could leak if it was faulty (or not 100% fitted)?, and that at least by the overnight stay they can check for leaks?
