Clunk!

My Disco (MY15) is in for its first service today. I mentioned, when checking it in, that there was a heavy clunk when engaging drive when facing uphill.

I am told (by the Service Technician) that this is a characteristic of this gearbox. I can't recall mention of it on the Forum. Can anyone expand upon this please.

I'm not too concerned at present as I've two years warranty left but I could do without the inconvenience if it turns into a major fault that could have been corrected simply today (A stitch in time ..............!)

Bulgaria 2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Buckingham BlueDiscovery 3

It's a daft question, but does this happen with the handbrake on and no pressure on the parking brake? If I'm facing up or down a hill and don't use the handbrake, then I get there same as you when the pressure comes off the parking pawl.

Don't you just love it when they trot out that old tosh. Means they can dismiss a multitudes of faults until they are out of warranty, then they change from characteristic to fault. Rolling Eyes

Thanks Robbie.

I remain sceptical and especially so when told that anything is a "characteristic" of the model. The Techie said it was the drive being taken up. To my mind, that's the slack being taken up so something worn or wearing.

Yep, same here. Our driveway is heavily sloped, and I get the same, and also on SWAMBO's A3. The clunk is extremely noticeable on the Audi, not so much on the D4.

What I do in both the Defender and now in the D4 is to go up the driveway in Low Range 1st: it gives time for the garage door to open and also keeps the cobwebs at bay. And if anyone stole either, they woudn't get very far (and that includes SWAMBO) Rolling with laughter

Try this (I read it on here) and think there is something in the manual about it, not that I've read it really.

Into neutral with footbrake on
Handbrake on
Release footbrake and let handbrake take the strain
Only then into Park

I don't get a clunk if there is no strain on the parking pawl, and I just drive off and let handbrake auto disengage when I'm on a hill.

Ditto that every time - it seems wrong to ask a small pawl to hold nearly 3 tons
When my EPB went, I used to chock it rather than just rely on Park
