EGRs blanked?

Okay... if it's the butterfly and the pipes we're removing to blank this off, what's the bit the actually fails and would normally be replaced for it to be working again?

The bit that fails is the actual EGR valve which is at the bottom of the pipes not the top.
Removing the butterfly just avoids confusing the air mixture as it would try to close to get the exhaust gas to be used, but as you've blanked it , you would starve the engine.

I'm about to do the blanking process on mine also.. But, now I've read this thread a new question has popped into my head.

The reasons I decided to do the blanking process was two fold.
1. We have recently noticed a lack of power on pull off. (edit. More a slight pause between pressing the pedal and the engine responding.)

2. Our mpg recently has dropped from about 24mpg to anything between 17-21mpg

So my question. Are the two indications above signs of a faulty egr? If so, how do I diagnose this and ensure 100% there is a fault, should this faulty egr be replaced before the blanking process?

If I don't have a faulty egr, then is it worth while replacing the egr before the blanking process any way?

Only way to properly diagnose is to have faults read. Come to the mids meet and I can do it for you. Thumbs Up

+1 they all go eventually and normally when you least expect it and tipically when you need the car most. Prevention is better than a cure sometimes.

Hi Pete Bow down

I still have Land Rover Extended Warranty on mine, so I am not quite yet in Panic mode, however we realy do need you to sort out the Euro 4 engines.
Is it not possible to add EGR perminantly shut / EML extinguished to your standard Remap, if so I will order a remap today.

I am interested in buying a disco3 soon and so i've been reading up a lot of useful tips etc on the forums. the EGR blank is definitely something I will install in my d3 from the moment i get it.
But I must say I absolutely do not understand why car manufacturers would put such a thing in a vehicle. exhaust gas replaces good oxygen in the chamber, making it all inefficient, and possibly detrimental to the life of the engine. why not avoid that, increase reliability, and save money by not making EGR pipes etc,???

Simple. Emissions.

The theory is that on low loads/partial throttle, there is unburnt fuel left in the exhaust gasses, together with some Nox and other stuff. So if you chuck it back in the engine, the unburnt fuel is burnt, the other gasses burn/convert into less harmful gasses and all is happy.

In the test lab it works well - unfortunately in real life, overtime the valves get gummed up with the gunk that gets recycled and they stick, in some cases so that the power disappears until you get to a couple of thousand rpm - I guess when the butterfly valve in the inlet air tract opens allowing fresh air in.
