Dual mass flywheel problem D3 |
|
I've done a qucik search but can't find anything on this. My local independednt garage reckon my dual mass flywheel could be on its way out on my 2005 D3 @ 90,000 miles. I've had the car since 2007 and its never towed a trailer.
I noticed at times there was a bit more vibration than usual from the engine although no one else seems to have noticed. In addition the fuel economy on motorway rusn has droped from a steady 32 mpg to 28 mpg. It's been into my local garage twice and they haven't found a fault although they did ask this time if I'd noticed the flywheel was getting noisy........
My questions are:
1. Have others had similar experiences?
2. Have I got any chance of getting Landrover to pay!!
3. Woudl this be the cause of the poor fuel economy.
Thanks.
I alos have a 92 Defender 110 which I've had from new. 177,000 miles including towing a 3 tonne traielr across Europe and It still has the same clutch.

I had the same problem. Lumpy on idle. Main dealer said it was injectors and wanted to charge a fortune to find out, local garage said DM fly wheel.
Local garage correct. Had clutch etc replaced.
So far two clutches and fly wheels replaced. The first at 28k under warranty, the second at 75K. The car has been used to tow my boat.

Cheers Moo.
The problem is the engine doesn't appear to be lumpy on idle. Only after a bit of a run. Its very subtle and my missus thinks I'm imaganing things so I was pleased when the mechanic asked if i'd noticed the noisy flywheel.
Any ideas on cost?

is the noise like a wine? mine does this and so does my friends i had it back and forth a few times to the garage also had it hooked up to diagnostics and they have found nothing, they told me if the fly wheel was on its way then the clutch would slip on heavey load, ie put car in 5th at 30 mph and floor it see if the revs and the speed pick up together. the vibration you discribe can you feel it only through the gear stick if so again both mine and my friends do it.
i chased mine around the car for about 6 months now given up and waiting for it to get worse

Having owned a D2 with a DM flywheel, which completely disintegrated at 170k, LR do not seem to have learnt or developed the clutch any further, as the D3 seems to have one that's almost identical.
Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

It's not only Land Rover that have DM flywheel problems, Ford mondeo's, Toyota's, in fact I've got a Rav 4 to do this week and that's on it's second flywheel that I know of. They are the worst idea ever thought up by the manufacturer !

The wine could be the aux diesel pump belt, where does the noise seem to be coming from..? ..so what can I fiddle with today that ain't broken ...?

I have just had the DM flywheel and clutch changed on my D3, at 115k.
First clutch it has ever had and it tows my Iford 511 horse trailer every week!
The cost was, erm expensive (£1200.00). This included a few other advised bits to be changed as well whilst in there.
But:
..it doesn't grab gears anymore, there is no rattle noise from the vehicle. Far quieter inside and sounds far free-er when starting.
The DM flywheel had discouloured, so had overheated at somepoint and warped. There wasn't much left of the clutch.
Ian ..so what can I fiddle with today that ain't broken ...?

Would not be surprised if it has gone, sounds very like the symptoms. DM Flywheels are truly hateful things whose only reason for existence seems to be to make a diesel engine that tiniest bit less rattly. The one on my Ford runabout disintegrated and of course took the clutch with it but showed exactly the symptoms you have described.
I have a friend with a D2 who had a solid flywheel installed when his DM one ate itself and 100k miles later he still swears by it, perhaps there is something similar available for the D3?

I'm afraid it's a 'consumable' item these days along with the clutch so it's not really a big surprise that it needs one. LR won't pay, for the reasons just stated.

Cheers all.
Must be aknown problem as our local LR dealer keeps them in stock!
The car is pulling like a train and my local garage mechanic was well impressed so theres no clutch slippage. Its just a very sublte change in the amount of vibration which you can see as the gear lever vibrates at idle and a difference in the mechnical noise - note Ididn't say engine noise! The main issue is the fuel economy has bombed.
I spoke to Pete at Bell Auto's y'day and kindly talked me out of buying an EGR blanking kit as he didn't think it was that. My EGR valves were replaced under warranty from LR about 5 years ago soon after I bought the car.
I know that with the FBH, heated seats etc on at this time of year it will use more fuel but I've had the car 6 years and never had such poor fuel connsumption. From 32 - 34 mpg down to 28.5 mpg all coinciding with the change in 'noise'.
My local garage reckon a problem with the flywheel can result in higher fuel consumption and that its a common problem with Vauxhall Vectra's as well.

Phil
Just a thought but could this be related to winter grade diesel? Makes engine run a little more rough than usual and would kick in around this time of year. If you have no clutch slip and no gear change issues I doubt it would be the DM flywheel personally.
