DTC - B12EE - tailgate won't open

Chaps,

Went to get into the car on Friday, all seemed to open OK, rear door opened to put coat on seat but then couldn't open the tailgate to put the dog in the cage... I could feel the micro switch moving but there was no sound of the solenoid unlatching the mechanism.

Then decided to lock the car before going back inside to get Land Rover Assistance number and got an immediate bleep bleep to signal the car would not lock.

Land Rover Assistance came out and got the fault code above B12EE-11 - the code means the tailgate latch isn't working but any ideas what the suffix 11 means? - is it as simple as the number of times the fault has occurred? Apparently according to the fault log this fault first cropped up about a week before going by the mileage it recorded at the time but I was not aware of it as the tailgate has always worked fine.

Anyway, LRA guy was very helpful, we tried all the 'usual' or obvious tricks like me pressing the unlock button while he pulled the tailgate but all to no avail. His advice was get it to a dealer so they could remove the rear trim and investigate.

Now at this point a word of caution if, like several of my friends, you have a large rigid dog box in the back such as a TransK9 or Lintran... I have a large cage which had to be removed to get access to the tailgate from the inside, fortunately I was able to put the rear seats down flat, slide the cage forwards and then fold it flat before removing it from a side door - had it been a rigid box then it would have to have been cut up in situ in order to get to the tailgate!

Warning over, back to the fault.

After checking where the closest dealer was who had a D4 as a loan car the LRA guy sent me on my way with a 'safe to drive' note on the job sheet. Arriving at the dealers I found the only parking spot in their yard, parked and got out of the car. Out of habit I reached into my jacket and pressed the lock button and the car locked and no double bleep... hmm, thinks I and tries the unlock button before going to the tailgate - yep, you've guessed it the tailgate worked fine!

Fortunately the LRA tech didn't clear the DTCs so there was still proof of the fault existing so the car was left for investigation/rectification and I got a nice(?) non descript metallic colour HSE with beige seats and carpets and formica trim to take home - now waiting for a call from the dealer.

To add to the confusion, according to the paperwork that came with the car when I bought it the selling dealer had fitted a new tailgate switch (black rubber bit that goes in the handle between the number plate lights) when the car was serviced just before I bought it so I'm wondering whether a) the fault was there before but the new switch hasn't fixed it or b) is the new switch faulty?

Faulty tailgate latches on the D2 were an easy fix - pop the Land Rover badge out, give it a squirt of WD40 or similar and pop the badge back on job done!

Has anyone come across this scenario before and can they offer any advice?

Welcome to the party! Nothing new I'm afraid... Whistle

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic99648.html

Dog crates in rear loadspace with a tailgate latch failure are well documented here.

The fault code is not, and may just be a hangover from when the switch was changed. Thumbs Up

Thanks Steve,

Been lurking on this site for a long time reading & taking in the various issues so well aware of the broken actuator bit but this is clearly not the same as by the time I'd driven down to Hunters in Soton it was working fine. That to me points to it being an electrical issue so fingers crossed it's easily identified and resolved.

Went into buying a D4 with eyes open & deliberately went D4 over D3 in the hope there'd be less chance of anything going wrong then went belt & braces to get one from a franchise dealer with an approved used warranty & Land Rover Assistance & VERY glad I did - would be in a darkened room sobbing right now if I'd bought this privately!

Lovely car to drive & head & shoulders above anything with a green oval I've had before but trying hard not to get stressed over stupid little things that detract from the overall experience of ownership.

At least when I go & collect it I can pop into Advanced Factors to get some LED bulbs Thumbs Up

If you're local, I'm happy to read your codes again and clear them down to see if the fault returns.

The tailgate actuator switch is in quite a harsh environment. It's subjected to all kinds of moisture, dust and dirt being kicked-up from the back of the car. The microswitch under the rubber cover is very often corroded in all the ones I've seen.

Thanks Steve, not that far away from you as it happens.

I will be far from impressed if the switch is fubar'd or turns out not to have been replaced at the service as it is clearly listed on the invoice both in terms of work carried out & parts fitted. Will see what Hunters say!

to cheekily butt in on your post ( Embarassed ).......

when you get it sorted, ask if there should be a small voltage present constantly across the pins powering up the tailgate actuator

Yep, it was going rather too fast on a wet country road with some not too good tyres & rather than making a bend it hit the offside front wheel head on snapping the stub axle clean off! Wheel, stub axle & half shaft were left in the road some distance from the "3 wheeler" after the event!

Woman driving the Fiesta got out without a scratch, if the Disco hadn't been driven into the nearside hedge prior to the accident in order to try & prevent the crash it would have ridden up over the bonnet & through the windscreen with a very different outcome!

As well as the axle it bent the radius arm and chassis leg as well as pushing the foot well in and twisting the shell...

Dropped the car off at Hunters in Southampton on Friday afternoon, got a 65 plate D4 HSE as a loan car and my car was redy to collect this afternoon (Tuesday) with the switch and solenoid both replaced. Hopefully that's it sorted.

Glad I have a warranty as the job sheet had the cost of parts & labour hand written on it Shocked
