Dreaded Gearbox judder / slipping – Now Gone!

First of all thanks to DanNL for pointing me to a cheap nearly new complete gearbox. Secondly thanks Nick (TLO) for thinking along and a BIG ThumpsUp for SteveNorman for talking to me and the Dutch LR dealership helping to get the new gearbox working. Thumbs Up

Due to leakage of glycol through the radiator into the ATF I suffered from a slipping for quiet some time. Although it wasn’t to bad and didn’t seem to get worse over time I wanted it solved. However talking to several specialist I did not get a conclusive advise. Some said just a flush and cleaning of the parts, others advised replacing just the torque converter or torque converter and eco (magtronics) and some advised a new gearbox. Offers varying from € 1600 to € 5500 (excluded radiator). Question Big Cry

So when DanNL pointed me to an eBay auction by Equicar 4x4 for a 18 mile old complete gearbox including a torque converter and megatronics ecu I for 750 pounds I considered myself a very lucky man.
Equicar guaranteed that this 2010 zf-autobox fitted my 2005 car and the part numbers did match up.

Had my local Indy fit the new rad and gearbox and then brought the car to the LR dealership to have the gearbox ecu programmed to my car. No matter what they did, the diagnostic equipment would not communicate with the gearbox ecu. Their conclusion was that once a ecu was programmed to a car it could not be reprogrammed to another car. This was confirmed by LR Benelux headquarters. ………
After talking to Nick, Steve Norman and ZF Holland I knew this was BS. Steve Norman was kind enough to talk to my dealer through the process for about an hour, however without success. After talking to ZF Holland again I found out that a 2010 ecu communicates at a different speed then my 2005 car and would never work. Big Cry Big Cry

This left me with several solutions.
1.) Remove the new box again. Buy a new ecu and use the torque converter from the new box and revision the old gearbox.
2.) Buy a new ecu to fit the new gearbox.
3.) Or use my old ecu (which still looked ok after the glycol contamination).

ZF Holland told me that my old ecu or new ecu would cause a risk. This newer 2010 gearbox has an e-clutch which is not supported properly by my old/new 2005 ecu. Or it would give to much friction causing heavy gear changes or to little friction causing things to burn and destroying the box. Reading between the lines I would say that there is also a chance that it would work ok.

Looking at the amount of money already spend ( € 2900 including 10 hour/€ 900 for LR programming) and the extra cost involved removing the new gearbox I took my chances. I ordered my LR dealer to install my old ecu, have it programmed and carefully take it for a test drive. Finally result!! It drives like never before. Smooth gear changes, no funny sounds and no judder/slipping and surging revs. Mr. Green

Although Equicars 4x4 is to blame in this case they did went the extra mile to solve it. Great service. They too did speak to LR headquarters. They happily offered to take back the gearbox and eventually ended up giving me a small refund to compensate the extra costs.

Glad you ended up with a working box...... I enjoyed walking through the tech how to program a used control unit (little did I know it was from a 2010 car!!)...you owe me a beer 8)

This goes to show, be wary of used parts unless you can be 100% sure they are the same.

Regards
Steve

Nice one Renton.

I've still got to sort out the slipping/surging, but will probably just change the torque convertor....

I'm happy you got it sorted after so much trouble Thumbs Up Thumbs Up
