Just to put in my 2cents worth... i honestly dont know why everyone here seems so anti the d5.

Seems like Maybach are not immune to designing ugly cars.
Gerry McGovern would be ideal suited to this brand.
LR could then get back a proper designer - Ian McCallum

Personally I don’t get all this anti Gerry McGovern, yeah the D5 isn’t his best but he’s not solely responsible.23.5MY Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE D250 MHEV Pangea Green

He's the CCO of JLR so with any LR design, he is ultimately responsible....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

One of the best quotes that I’ve ever heard from an automotive designer is: “A good design needs no explanation, but it takes considerable oratory skill to pass off bad design as good”.
Whilst it’s clear the D5 was not directly Gerry McGovern’s fault, I have watched him stand up in front of some pretty nasty designs and spout near endless pretentious twaddle. Compare this to the presentation of Ian Callum, someone whose designs usually need no explanation, where he is brief, easy to understand, honest and to the point.2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Did Callum make a bad design?Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Not if you consider the following list from Top Gear site...
The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Sorry, I didn’t mean to suggest that. I’m not aware of a single duff design of his; I was just trying to contrast their ways of communicating, with Callum being an unpretentious man of relatively few words, who let his designs speak for themselves 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

GM always gives me the impression he wants the recognition that Jony Ive got at Apple, deserved or not, he was very much at the centre of it all. GM however seems to have also been influenced by Laurence Llewellyn Bowen. I suppose if you’re artistic you are more likely to be flamboyant but he does seem to try too hard. Time will be his ultimate critic will the designs still be controversial (is that a bad thing?) or will they be looked back on with affection.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Jony Ive dresses rather simplistically while Gerry McGowern looks like he bought a bit of everything from the Saville Row catalog to fit in as an Italian count.

There are many parallels with Chris Bangle (BMW). In his case, not dressing like a flamboyant student on his way to a fancy dress party, but similar in taking pride in his “controversial” designs, the upset they caused and talking a lot at launches.
Ultimately, he and BMW parted ways, he went on to obscurity and his “design language” (yuck!) was quickly erased from the company’s product line. Few will remember his designs fondly, but many more might remember him giving the contemporary 5 Series a set of, funny looking, Dame Edna glasses
Gert Hildebrand (who?) suffered a similar fate after his dreadful Mk1 MINI Countryman...2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
