Disco 3 - Preheater

Can anyone clarify my query please? Its impossible to speak with Landrover Technical these days and the dealership, not through want of trying, does not seem to be able to get the right answer from their contacts either.

I do miss the timer programme which unfortunately died with the enhancement upgrade I was given after a suspension compressor failure. The observation I have made is that during our cold spells, the pre heater is running continually when the engine is running and the outside temperature is in the region of 5'C or below even though the engine temperature is up to NORMAL, sometimes it even continues firing for a while after the engine is turned off.

I do not recollect this happing before the enhancement, even when driving in temperatures of -15'C and only became suspicious when my fuel consumption fell to below 16mpg.
I don't really know if that is the way it it should be working or if it is a 'blip' in the enhancement programme. I would have thought that when the engine is at running temperature it should turn off, not continue burning expensive fuel to heat the coolant which would then be cooled by the radiator.
Have any other owners experienced or suspected this situation Question

Would appreciate any opinions/comments or even a contact number for LR Tech.(like the old days) so I can express my suspicions directly.

I look forward to any feedback.

Thanks,

I have the same concern, and the same suspicion that my mpg has reduced as a result. This started after I had returned the car for a suspension repair and re-programme.

Also interested in whether there needs to be a resolution.

MY07 does exactly the same, often hear it running for a few seconds after the engine is off......doesn't seem to affect the fuel consumption though steady around 26mpg (lot of shortish journeys)

Is it actually running after we switch off the engine or is the fuel burning heater's blower fan doing a shut down purge routine?

Ocsid,
Reference the pump,fan or firing.

I know that a pump or fan in the assembly runs on after switch off but sometimes the actual firing carries on, you can feel the exhaust blowing from the pipe. CAUTION -The end of the pipe gets very hot. My main suspicion is that it is running continually when the engine is running and it's sbout 5'C or below outside.

Thanks

It would be good to get the definitive lowdown on this from someone within LR that actually rally knows how this heater is being controlled now.

They seem to have fitted it and then given up on getting the control of it sorted.

Anyone at Lakeland have a contact that could help?

Perhaps someone from LR might be reading this and fell inclined to let us know what LR intend to do with the program and control of this rather useful winter item.

Yes, it would be nice if this could be 'fired up' independently of the engine running to warm the engine / car on those cold mornings ...

I too wondered if the FBH was running all the time but after some investigation believe it isn’t.

With the air temp around freezing went for a drive easily long enough to warm the engine completely, stopped the car and got out leaving the engine running and lifted the bonnet to check the FBH. Definitely not running. Turned engine off and left it for about 10 mins. Not long enough you might think for the engine too cool significantly, however, on restarting the engine the FBH also started. Believe my s/w level is correct as have the update to prevent fumes from the FBH entering the car. Only partially successful, still a bit smelly at times.

Have experienced the FBH running after the engine has been stopped. This seems to occur when I’ve started the car for only a few moments, e.g. to shuffle cars in the drive. Stops after a short while.

Agree it would be nice to understand if this behaviour is as intended or whether there are bugs in the software.

Mine does this also. The enhancement puts the aircon into recirc on a cold start to prevent fumes. This seems to work ok, but I think that on a warm start, the fbh does ignite and the fumes then do enter the cabin.

The FBH on mine does shut off during a good run. However, if the air is cold enough and the speeds are slow (traffic etc.) then the engine may not get up to the 75 degrees needed to shut the fbh down. The TDV6 is actually a very efficient engine that does not waste energy by producing large amounts of heat. Hence the need for the FBH.
