Cumbria Green Lanes
Just heading back up the M6 after a brilliant day out in Cumbrias green lanes.
We had five cars, AJM and Kev91 in D3s, Euan and his brother in his D4, fost long strider and Stepheno in Defenders, I hitched a ride with Stephen.
We travelled to Windermere manor hotel Monday evening, at £55 b&b for a twin room it was very reasonable and a lot lot better than I was expecting.
First thing today we firstly went to the High Breast Road, what a great green road, and yes it was very narrow in a couple of places.
We then headed back to the Windermere ferry, £4.30 per car, and then up to Grizedale, another superb track.
From there we did high tibertwaite, the best one of the day for me, where Kev managed to get a cut tyre, but got out before we needed to change his wheel, that was the only casualty of the day.
We then ended up on the old coach road, with the light fading quickly.
I think the quality of the lanes surprised all of us, and that we would all highly recommend a day out here.
I have a few hundred photos to upload which I will put a few up and link to the rest, probably tomorrow. I will also put up the link for the Cumbria council website which has some superb information on hundreds of green lanes, and post which ones we did.
Only another hour and a half in this damm defender now, my a***e is just getting so numb!Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Just walked in the house,a great day and well done to Dave and Stephen for organising it.....scuffed alloy and some dents in the side tubes were a small price to pay
I'll wait for your pics Dave,as I was otherwise occupied trying not to open up the side of my car like a tin can "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

I think its minimal....I did go to take the tubes off but sheared a bolt and didn't have time to muck about ...only thumped down on them a couple of times due to Daves excellent spotting....
Spent most of my time watching the 4x4 screen.....fascinating watching the E-diff in action and the speed at which it reacts......missed a screenshot of both diffs fully locked and red,and both axles turned red on the graphic..... 8)"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Brilliant day with brilliant company and the weather surprisingly held up for us. I'm sure we will all be back down very soon. As Dave says the info supplied by Cumbria council is excellent. Thanks also to Hairy Dan for the info & advice.

Excellent day of driving.
Yes, there is one bridge where a D3 with sidesteps is almost as wide as the bridge... I looked but there is no breath in mode on the terrain response..
Good mixture of routes and terrain to climb.
Did get a slight chuckle at getting the D3 to walk up part of a slope that the Deafeners had trouble getting at due to cross axelling.
Oh, the best part was at the end of the day, when you wanted to go home, you flicked 2 switches and turned a dial, turning the D3 from rock crawler to tarmac spec, setting the heating just so.. and putting the cruise at 70 and letting it munch the miles to take me back home. In loving memory of FA54WSK.
Rest well old friend, your work is done.

I bet I know the exact bit you mean D4 walked up without too much trouble and the 2 Defeners behind were scrambling for grip with wheels in the air Cheers Ian

If I'm not mistaken there was a bit of mucking about with manual diff locking etc on a rock face
Much better to let the electronics sort it out ....
....But a big thanks to the Defener boys for leading the way "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Reiterating the posts above. Theses were some of the best off road sections ever. Challenging for both defenders and discovery's the discoveries just seemed to float up some of the rocky sections with their electronic gizmos making it all too easy. Our defenders relying on chunky tyres. All in all a great day out and we'll worth the 6 hour round trip to get there . And we even had a cruise on a lake to boot. Fab!,
I for one would do it all againDiscovery 3 2006
