Clutch master cylinder leak
I was going to fit my new Traxide system today and was looking for a suitable grommet to run the cable through when I discovered that I have a clutch master cylinder leak
The leak is small but there were fluid drops further down on the spring and also some stains on the isolating material
A couple of questions:
I guess I need to replace the master cylinder or are there any seals/o-rings that can be replaced?
How difficult is it to replace the master cylinder? DIY job possible?
As the leak is small, can I still drive the car (If I am extra careful when changing gears...)? Or is it stupid to risk it?
I checked the brake/clutch fluid reservoir and the fluid level is above the max-limit. The previous owner had the brakes replaced 6 months ago so I guess the overfilling was done then.
The car is a manual MY05 LHD

Master cylinder only comes as a complete unit, cant refurb it
It can be done DIY. Very fiddly however, as space is restricted. Hardest part of the job is probably bleeding the system.
If you did keep driving it, it would (eventually) empty the brake reservoir, but it would take a long long time for that to happen, and the low fluid warning would come on before you lost brakes anyway...
Otherwise, the M/C could fail completely, and leave you with no clutch at all

hi Henrik,
I think that's your answer (and suspect that DiscoMickey will agree when he reviews your post).
There is a reason why there is a "Max" level and that is partly to prevent this occurring. At times, the excess fluid has to exit somewhere, and that is generally through the cap.
I recommend that you remove the excess fluid and clean things by wiping down the reservoir area and flushing the lower components with water.
Keep an eye on the fluid level for a month or too in order to make sure that there is no other problem.
Best Wishes,

OK, thanks a lot for your comments!
I will remove the excess fluid and monitor the leak
