Does anyone have any recommendations for a good economical supplier of chains for the Disco? I'm looking at chains for the fleet of vans but none of the suppliers lists the 255/55/19 chain that will fit my car?
I usually buy from one of the Auto-chains in France when I go over, but this year I'm not going until well after Christmas and could well need them before!

I had a problem a couple of years ago in the UK, they are a bit rare. I ened up with 'snow straps' and as soon as I can locate the invoice, I will let you know.

robbed this off another site but i think its valid;
France, Austria, Switzerland, and now Germany (not the ski resorts) have mandatory winter tyres for ALL surfaces which are frozen, this also applies to ALL 4WD vehicles!!! PLUS there are particular roads where chains are mandatory AS WELL.
PLUS there is a mandatory 50kph (30mph) limit ALWAYS and no matter where with chains fitted!!!! TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue and still smiling

Blimey I should think so. 30 with chains fitted is a bit dodgy, shouldn't have thought they would have had to make a law for common sense.
In most of Europe and East Europe where snow is guaranteed it is law to have both winter and summer tyres togther with snow chains or studded tyres. It is even more bizzare because many East Europeans cannot afford decent set of any tyres yet.

Er- aren't you living in the UK BN?
They outlawed the phrase 'common sense' years ago.

http://www.carparts-direct.co.uk/ are £79.99 or try http://www.roofbox.co.uk/snowhome.html and look at the snow chains and more interestingly the autosock...let me know if you get them and use them in anger as i intend to ski drive the 3 valleys in january. TDV6 HSE Buckingham Blue and still smiling

I think I'm correct in saying that Carparts direct don't list them large enough for the 19inch wheels and the Rud chains are circa £190 which is a bit steep!

The thing to remember when deciding which ones to get is if you have any vehicle issues as a result of using snow chains you're only covered by the warranty if they're LR approved ones, which basically means the ones they sell The End

Just had a quote for LR ones ......£370 !!!
I think I'll risk the warranty issues, what problems could you forsee anyway?

Just for the record, I don't think winter tyres are generally compulsory in Germany yet (having narrowly avoided being stuck in a 14 km traffic jam on the autobahn last Friday -when I couldn't see any snow at all- the practical evidence points in this direction too!). It is being talked about, though, and the restriction will probably be introduced next year. However, as the fine seems to be €20 or €40 if you cause a traffic jam (Stau), I'm not sure the regulation will convince many sinners to buy extra tyres.
I fitted my winter tyres last Monday, 4 days before the snow arrived - oh, what a good boy am I

Does anyone know who manufactures the LR approved chains? For sure they just have a LR label slapped on thme and are manufactured by a German or Swiss OEM.... WinchMan

RUD Snow chains - Rieger und Dietz GmbH, based at Aalen in Germany claim to be OEM suppliers to Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Landrover, Mercedes, Saab, Volvo, and VW.
Dont know if this is correct, but found it following one of the links to snow chains at the beginning of this thread.
