My car needs Adblue- why would you do it yourself?

Having read all the threads here on topping up Adblue on a D4 I have surmised the following.

No one seems to describe the easiest actual method to do it ( not talking about the 1.89l bottles which are easy)
If you only put in a 1.89l bottle it’s sort of pointless, as the tank is 18 litres
If you buy some 10l drums you save money
There’s an official Land Rover adblue tip up kit which includes the clever spout needed to prevent airlocks and glugging, saving time standing holding a very heavy drum (part no LR 104014) but the kit is about £53

So, having looked at options to do this myself I’ve come to the conclusion that even though I’m fully capable, why would I bother?

Reason being, rang my local dealers and they charge £30 for a fill up. No appointment needed, just rock up and they fill it up. No need to buy drums of it and struggle with the mess and lifting them.

You can’t buy 2 x 10l drums for that, so overall, the Dealer wins this one for me.

Thoughts?

I buy 10l drums for £11.99. B&Q always seems to be cheap.

I then just use a measuring jug and flexible funnel to fill up. I've been doing it years. No issues and by measuring I know how much has gone in. Currently do this on my Defender and daughters Discovery Sport.

The dealer is easy but for me its an hour round trip and is expensive.

Does the flexible funnel have an anti airlock tube in it?

Everything I’ve read about DIY with a funnel suggests it sits there for ages glugging away, spitting out etc.

I know some have bought the genuine 1.89l bottle, emptied it and cut the bas off to use as a funnel after

Here it is at service stations, at €1/L. They fill it for you from a pump, without any further problems. For the price, is it worth buying drums? then a small amount of anti-crystallization additive will prevent future incidents with the tank and corresponding injector of the damn adblue. 🤬

£7 for 10L. Takes a few minutes

Why wouldn't you do it yourself?

It's a funnel. I just fill it slowly with a jug. Never had any issues. Thumbs Up

My local Asda fuel station has an Adblue pump for cars, I thinks it's £1.49/ltr.
I will probably use that next it needs filling but that won't be for 18 months to 2 year time as I've just filled it up.
 Cheers

I buy 10l drums of Redex Adblue from Costco and it comes with a flexible spout with the extra anti airlock inlet.

Filled my Defender a couple of weeks ago, for the second time in 27k miles. Screwfix 10l carton. Came with a spout and took 5 minutes. Pretty sure it was less than a tenner.

Cheapest I can find 10 litres for is £11-£12. Which is a fair bit less than it used to be not so long ago.

Filling the FFRR, using a funnel, is never as spill free as it should be, there's always an air lock however slowly and carefully I pour it. The filler is located in the n/s wing which doesn't help.

In the future I might try using a pump at a filling station, if the price is reasonable, something I've never done before.

Surprisingly we have two or three Adblue pumps for passenger vehicles local to me in Devon & Cornwall. I
used to fill an A4 with Adblue from the pump, the only downside was it took an age. Much easier & cleaner than 10L cartons though. i believe you can get a gravity lift pump to fit them if you are unable to hold a 10L carton.
I saw 10L in B&M recently at £10.99
The dealer never used to charge for Adblue when the D4 was serviced, although i noted on the most recent service they charged me £24 for 7 ltrs!

Same as Moo, just take your time and if it does overflow from too quick a fill, just wash the spill away afterwards.

As above, it's only about 12 quid and takes about 5 minutes Laughing I stab a small hole in the top of the container once it's upside down, stop the glugging and it just flows in easily using the supplied spout
