Can't get in my car after 10 days off not using it.

It's clear I have a problem.

I was on holiday for 10 days and now I am back I can not open my D3.
I first tried my wives keys and the D3 didn't reacy on that. My wives hardly drives the D3 so that keys could be empty. So I took my own keys and still it didn't react.
I tried opening it via the emergy opening via the Drivers door (LHD) and still the door doesn't open. So I think I have a flat battery. It is a new one from january. Censored Big Cry

I have a pm from TFC with a way how to get in the car but my fingers aren't the correct size. So I am thinking off a way how to put enough power in the car to be able to open it.

I think there are 2 ways but I am not sure.

1. via the towhook electrics. Does this work? I have a 13 pin system on my D3 but my multimeter is in the car so I cannot get to it to measure with pin to take. I tried with a light and some wire but I nowhere get the Idea
So the battery could be empty to much to get the light lighting up.

2. via the winch cables.
I have to get to the winch relais box situated behind the winch protected by the Sump protection plates. The car is low as it is standing for more then 10 days now so it is lowered very much. I probably have to Jack it up first. Evil or Very Mad
Do I have enough space to get the relais cover off? To get with the jump leads to the wires to put some power back in the car?

I may be wrong Roel, but I thought the emergency opening with the key acted mechanically to unlock the door, because it is so bl**dy stiff to operate. Rolling Eyes

I am afraid it is not. I know it is going stiff so when I bought it I oiled it and made it go easy again. I am reasonable sure that it is only for when your key is powerless. If your car is powereless you have to find another way. But I could be wrong.

I had exactly this problem, last year, when I left my car for 10 days and came back to it and the battery was flat. The car was only 18 months old at the time, so it was unlikely that there was an issue with the battery. It turned out that I had left the switch activated for my roof lights, which in turn activated one side of two relays, thus providing enough current to flatten the battery.
I called out LR assist and it took the engineer about 45 minutes to get in. I won't go into details here, but it involved releasing the bonnet catches which isn't easy. By the way - the mechanical opening with the key won't work because with no power, the deadlocks can't be activated.
I was taught to be cautious.

I think you put that on here so I read that and remembered that the emergency opening of the doors won't work then. On that TFC pm'ed me how to get in but my fingers are too big.

Often leave mine for 15- 22 days at a time with no flat battery as yet.
Since the car is parked securely maybe I should pop the bonnet latch when i leave it.

I reasonable sure it is my car as it is parked next to my house and the rubbish I have in my car is still there, so if it isn't mine somebody made some effort.

It could be a little p Censored d off as I went on holiday and to make matters worse I went off-road in a rental car. The only 4x4 I could rent was a J Censored p so I toke the cheapest car I could get:

The D3 should understand that paying overweight for 2500 kg would be a little much.

Hopefully you have sorted by now but if not your thought of charging through the towing socket sounds favorite..

Pin 9 12+
Pin 13 12-

Sure if you charge for 20-30 mins the doors will open and you can then charge or jump start in the normal way.

Just been down the road to start and move the MY05 D3 belonging to a neighbour whos currently working out in Basra

D3 was sat on a sloping drive abso-bl**dy-lutely on its bumpstops, brakediscs rusting and park brake on - been like this since end of February Shocked Was not feeling too confident. Warned his missus there might be a screecher from the park brake when I tried to drive it off...

Anyway - pleasantly surprised, started first time no issue, wound the window down, jumped out and shut the door and watched as it majestically rose off its stops to full height nice and steadily Thumbs Up

Park brake came off no problem. Ran it up and down the road a couple of times, no sticking brakes, no nothing - just a bit of a smell from the FBH but other than that great Thumbs Up

Hello XTC,

I took the bottum plate off and have opened the warn relais box. I was thinking that the cables to the might be a little thin to charge the system from there. The red cable to the relais box should be coming straight from the battery, is this correct?
My problem is that I left everything in the D3 including my multimeter so I can't see if there is a little voltage left to confirm that I have a straight connection to the battery.
Can you confirm that the RED cable goes straight to the battery?

If so I'll have a batery charger coming tommorow so I can charge it from their.

Thanks
 Roel

I have a nasty feeling that that red wire from the relay box goes to another isolating relay fitted behind the battery. This relay is powered up when the ignition is on and the remote handset plugged in. So, no I do not think that wire will be live.
The additional relay is so that the winch can only be used with the ignition on to stop others plugging in a remote handset and messing with your winch. (like running the cable over the roof and hooking to your towbar and then winching in.....).

It will be fine to charge via the tow socket with a normal charger, say up to 20 amps. (Most are 10 or less) I'm pretty sure that it has a 40a fuse in that circuit. The doors will open after 30 mins or so of charging and then you can connect to the battery and charge in the normal way.
Make sure you disconnect from the socket once the doors are open before trying to start the engine as this may well blow that fuse! And definately don't try to boost start via the socket!
Good luck!
Richard.

I was a little afraid that there was a relay as I knew the winch doesn't work when the ingnition isn't switched on. I hoped/thought that that relay was fitted in the remote wires and not in the full current circuit.
There is something for putting the relay there so in an emergency you can just switch the engine off and the winch should stop too.

Thanks.
