I suggest a trip to your local Ford Main dealers for your top up oil. The Ford Focus uses the same grade semi-synthetic oil as the TDV6 and it's somewhat cheaper than LR main dealer: £5'ish per litre.

I thought we should be putting fully synthetic into the D3?

I understand that semi-synthetic is used so that the 'burn rate' allows for additional oil to be added throughout the extended service interval - refreshing the oil as it were.
The top up oil provided by my local main dealer is semi...?

Just checked with the dealer, it is semi. So what oil should I buy then? The Castrol I was going to get is fully-synthetic.

I suggest that you try the 5 30w from the local Ford dealer - all part of the PAG group and meets the BS standard in the handbook, and important cheaper. The screen on the srvice desk was turn towards me on the last purchase and it stated a cost price to EMG Ford of £1.98 per litre. I paid £5'ish.

The ford oil is excatly the same as the landrover oil.
Its made by castrol.
They put the same oil in the ford, jaguar, and landrover petrol engines when they are being built.
It will be the same for the diesels.

I phoned the Ford dealer in Bristol (Brunel Ford) to ask the price of the 5/30 oil as mentioned above. The cost for 5lt is £21.53 + VAT, but currently -30% discount. I do not know if this applies to all Ford dealers, but worth phoning to check.

Well done guys, Forum power!
I’ve been checking my oil once a week as a result of what is on this site. Its been steadily going down and is now midway between the full/empty at 5000 miles.
Due to the Castrol recommendation on the filler plug I went on the Castrol website, selected TDV6 (strangely no D3 but there is a RRS). Castrol recommended Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W-30, stating ‘Increased fuel efficiency for modern engines (including modern Ford engines). Meets the requirement of Ford WSS-M2C913-B’.
A quick look in the handbook and Land Rover recommend – Land Rover WSS-M2C913-B preferred, but for petrol engines only? For diesel Land Rover recommend 5W/30 oil meeting ACEA:B1 or B3.
Castrol GTX Magnatec 5W-30 meets ACEA: A1/B1. I think the earlier posts that its all made by Castrol is correct. Castrol recommend the same specs for the Jaguar TDV6! Halfords £9.95 a litre.
Anyway I went to my favourite Ford Dealer (yes I’ve got 3 Fords if you include the D3). I had a quick chat with the parts and service manager and he confirmed its all the same and the TDV6 is made at Daganham along side Ford/Jaguar engines (I knew this thanks to Discostu)
I bought 5 litres of Ford premium performance oil meeting all the above specs in a silver container @ trade. £13.92 inc vat.
Before leaving the Ford Dealership we joked about there being a Daganham dustbin in the D3/RRS/S Type/XJ. I could hardly be offended as he knows I have an immaculate Cortina Mk2 1500gt mothballed in my garage!
I also enquired about a 7000 mile oil change and was quoted around £50 including the filter. D3 gone for now

Cliff,
Sandicliffe Leicester, but as LT has said I think it includes up to 30% off. The oil change was an off the cuff quote so don't hold them to ransom
H D3 gone for now

go to your dealer and buy the LR 50/30 designed for the TDV6.
You will find your MPG goes up slightly and the oil level stays consistent for weeks !
oh... and its not badly priced either.

I have spoken to the technical helpline at Castrol, he wouldn't actually commit on the phone to saying that the Ford & the Landrover branded 5/30 oil was exactly the same as Castrol Magnatec, but he said that the co.s had strong links & really implied that they were.
With the current 30% discount , I'll be stocking up on the Ford branded 3/50 oil & use it for oil changes.
My TDV6 hasn't actually used any oil at all after 2,700 miles! I check it every few days as I was expecting it to burn a bit in the first 10k miles.

I must confess to wimping out when it comes to 'going off piste' with things like oil. It can be a bit of a minefield as far as I am concerned so I take the line of least resistance and do what is recommended. In this case I shelled out for a 5L can of Castrol from a LR dealer in Plymouth.
This pleasure set me back £31.20 ("with some discount Sir"). Still, I can now sleep in my bed knowing that the right stuff is gurgling in her veins! SideSlope
