Brakes - new pads and discs? OEM?

Lots of posts on this topic, but have a couple of unanswered questions still and wondered if anyone can help.

I have an LD4 MY2013 with 70K on the clock - mostly town driving and had it mentioned at the last service that I would need new brake pads "soon" - and that was about 5000 miles ago.

I have a local mechanic who can fit but wondering, sight unseen:
1) Should I be buying discs as well as pads at this stage (never changed discs)
2) Have contacted AF and they can supply Borg & Beck pads - any feedback on these good or bad?
3) If consensus is best to replace with OEM brake parts, what are these and best place to purchase.

thanks everyone!

Probably best not to skimp on pads (or discs) as they are the only things stopping 2.5 tonnes of Discovery ploughing into something!

Have a look at the discs through the wheel and (when cold, not when you’ve just pulled up Rolling Eyes ) feel if there is a lip on the outer edge of the disc, if this is pronounced then probably best to replace, also look at the thickness of the disc remaining… again there should be plenty of thickness here to. If in doubt replace..

As for Borg & Beck, have fitted these on several cars, along with genuine (ouch) and also Brembo and other such makes, many in here have had issues with discs warping so you takes your chances. By using a reputable retailer (rather than eBay) you could always get them replaced if they are under warranty.

Can your mechanic not supply ? Many will not fit parts not sourced by themselves (understandably). Stand by for many differing opinions Laughing

thanks for all the info Nige and to answer your question, the mechanic is a mate who uses his company's workshop at the weekend for private work, so happy for me to source parts.

If you can wait for a couple of weeks for delivery, buy Brembo discs and pads from autodoc.uk

You won't find them cheaper elsewhere, and they are as good if not better than O.E.

Thanks Dave, that sounds interesting - I was looking at Brembo - and as not in a rush this may well be the way to go.

I fitted Borge and Beck pads and disks from AdvancedFactors 3 years and 30k miles ago, they are still on but I will be changing some time soon, can’t recommend them enough including the suppliers, it still impresses me how the brakes bite with little effort on my part, guess what I will be fitting and they are OEM Thumbs Up
PS the previous set of disks and pads where Brembo and I prefer B&B out of the two.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I fitted Borg & Beck front discs and pads only a few weeks ago. They are absolutely fine. I was getting a bit of "nibble" under light braking and when slowing to a halt with the unknown make parts that were fitted by the selling dealer (albeit nearly 4 years ago). I suspected the discs had worn and had gone out of balance, it's now perfectly smooth with nice progressive braking. Bought the parts as a complete kit from Advanced Factors. Easy DIY job.

I recently fitted Meyle disks from Advanced Factors along with EBC Greenstuff pads. Best stopping I've ever had.

Be Careful with Brembo - the brand name in the UK is owned by Euros and they use it re badge cheap crap - its why its always on discount there. If you can get Brembo from inside europe then its a chance its decent quality.

Can't answer your original question but I've fitted Meyle pads recently and have been somewhat underwhelmed with the feel of them - the stopping is fine but initial bit is, well, not very "bitey"
