Blue smoke under acceleration - turbos to be replaced |
|
I purchased the new D4 V6 3.0 Turbo Diesel top of the range. Shortly after purchase noticed that it was blowing a cloud of blue smoke under acceleration - i.e when accelerating to join a motorway, when accelerating to overtake. At all other times there is no visible smoke.
Been back at the dealer 4 times without any success - now told that a decision has been made to replace 2 turbo's as a 'preventative' measure.
Is this a known issue ?

Both turbos replaced ? What about an oil-ring failure . It's a new engine
and this is usually how & when it shows . Engine oil is blue , unburnt fuel
is black/grey .......

I have the same issue, it has been back to the dealers several times and already had a EGR valve replaced which has improved the fuel economey. I spoke to them on Friday and they confirmed that LR UK are looking at the issue and that I may well end up having both turbos replaced under warranty, justv waiting for the final decission/investigation to take place. Hi, both turbos have now been replaced. The smoke has gone so it looks that this problem is now solved. Apparently there was visible traces of oil in one of the turbos.
All happy until last night when I received 'gearbox fault' and all of the associated errors. Turn the car off and the messages disappear - presumably this is only a computer issue.
Off to the dealer again I suppose!

The gearbox fault indication is almost certainly due to low battery voltage.........they probably had it in the workshop powered up without the engine running for too long. Mine did this only this morning, quick restart and it went away......just one of those LR niggles that keeps us buying them 2011 D4 Landmark, Mini Cooper SD Clubman, Range Rover Vogue SE

Hi, the turbo replacement took about a week once the parts arrived which was less than 2 weeks once the decision was made to replace the turbos.
I was also intrigued by what would happen with fuel economy - happily I can say that around town I am getting just over 10 liters per 100klms - on the highway 9 or under.
Thanks for the advice about the gearbox fault error.

I reported blue smoke under acceleration on my D4. They claim no fault found. I might have to follow this up. Discovery 4 SE Long range fuel tank Kaymar Rear Bar.
