Never happened to me but there are many who have resolved this.

I am assuming the rear is as susceptible as the front?

I had the same, it was as simple as pieces of vegetation from a tree I park under caught in the hatch seal.
Also, is the upper brake light cracked?
 Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.
Ex D3 and D4

The other point of water entry may be where the rear window washer seals in the upper rear door.

Just checked mine (looking for where OP's leak might come from) and realised that it is starting to become perished.

The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)
