Just wanted to add my two pence worth on the debate of living in the Highlands.
I have been going on holiday to the Tomintoul/Glenlivet area for about 30 years . I joined a group from my local pub in Battersea who went every summer . Then one of my best mates semi retired up there.
I bought a remote cottage 23 years ago and spend about 4 weeks a year there.
As Dangerdave says a load of people come up on holiday . love it and decide to move up. From what I have seen many give up after a couple of years . The costs of heating and transport , distances to shops and every other possible service you may want ( I do a round trip of 66 miles for a bag of nails !) , let alone the social side.
Also the weather can be grey and miserable for weeks on end. I know people with SAD who have special lamps in their houses due to lack of sunlight in the gloomy months. The temperature can be very low for ages - in teh winter of 2009/10 Tomintoul had 3 months of solid ice and snow - have a look at the picture in my gallery. Some people decided to move as they could not face another winter like it.
No matter how much you like testing driving conditions in a 4WD it gets to be a real problem - especially with fuel shortages - for both heating and diesel oil.
Having said all that I keep going back as it is spectacularly beautiful . I like being in a remote place where maybe we get 2 walkers passing our house in a day. I like skiing and hill walking which are just there to do - and fishing , wild life and many good friends made over the years.
Most of all though I have the choice to be there or not. When the weather is good I cannot think of a better place to be ( and sun means no midges which are a real pain in the evenings ).
