Another Dead D4, Broken Crank
sadly my D4 commercial , died today, death rattle then stopped, diagnosis, is a broken crank, the crankshaft pulley wobbles when the retaining nut is turned and the back of the crankshaft does not turn...
So that now leaves me with a 2011 commercial (173,000 miles needing an engine or a new owner.
a 2010 6 speed D4 that runs but needs turbos on it which has done 137,000 miles, so this could become the donor for the Commercial, but I don't have time or interest to do that work. and I have a complete D4 engine and 8 speed box that I removed from my original D4 when it died after an over speed event, that engine is complete and was turning when it was removed. so could be a source of parts.
The challenge is I would like to re-engine my commercial with a fully rebuilt engine, but have no confidence in any of the engine suppliers other than land rover. the vehicle its self is a good spec and known to me so i am confident in the rest of the Disco.
so what is the current conscientious on the cost for a long land rover engine and two new turbos fitted and back in the car?
or sell the lot and go an buy a proper 4x4 that will last longer than bar of chocolate, (if anyone fancies some projects drop me a PM)
I am up near Aberdeen by the way.

I admire your persistence! Most people would have given up after the first dead Disco, but you persevered and had two more! Richard

Going rate is around £8k + VAT for a replacement 3.0, Inc fittingMy D3 Build Thread
Apart from the usual mileage restrictions (that never gets mentioned in their headline “7 Year Warranty” banner), many of the exclusions point towards plenty of arguments with Ssangyong. And no, it doesn’t “do what a Disco does”, lacking height adjustable, self levelling, all round independent air suspension for a start. Are they still running live rear axles on the SsangYong Rectum too?!2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

Red Merle, went over the warranty in detail personally and also with the dealer. It is like for like with most manufactures. I am on their servicing plan so only authorised dealership work so they have stated if anything goes wrong they will fix it. Yep there may be some battles but I am sure there will be with other car producers. No it doesn't have independent air suspension, clearly if this is important to someone then do not buy it. For me it means I am not replacing an air compressor every three years and a number of bags, sorting out leaks etc etc.
I was responding to the Op as a suggestion that Ssangyong have a number of vehicles that may suit his use, like the Musso etc etc.James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

That's simple and easy using them, as a family we run 4 at any one point in time, these engines hit a mileage point around 130-170,000 miles and they go bang or go on to do star ship mileages.
Servicing is all top notch and i am a long term holder of LandRover products, the simple realty is LandRover can no longer build high mileage capable engines, you only need to look at the number on here that have gone bang.
Changed days from the earlier engines that ran forever..

Another Dead D4
Hi,
Have just joined all the other sufferers - was on holiday in Peak District a week ago and was driving back to my caravan from Buxton, thought I heard a slight ticking sound like a stone in the tyre - within two minutes sounded like the bottom was falling out of the engine - stopped - diagnosis now a seized/broken crank !
Just to make things even more annoying had just had cam belts, water pump, and drive belt replaced four weeks ago, plus car is serviced correctly albeit not with a Land Rover dealer.
Good old Green Flag - Transporter for Car, Us, Dogs, and Towing the Caravan home.
Car is a 2012 3.0SDV6 HSE with just 86,000 miles from new - now have a car that working is worth about £15k ? but to get to that point possibly have to spend c.£6-8k on having engine replaced.
My 'Mr Fixit' is trying to find a wreck that has a good engine and Turbo's that he can test before fitting in mine - obviously dependent upon age/mileage might need new cam belts !
Can't believe Land Rover have just allowed this problem to continue
Now driving a Skoda Fabia Diesel that I ahve been lent, 130,000 miles and starts first touch.
