It is an interference engine
When belts break they suffer from:
Snapped cam caps
Broken bolts for said caps
Bent cams
Broken rockers
Bent/twisted tappets
Cracked pistons
Oddly, I've never seen a bent valve My D3 Build Thread

My SDV6 has just gone (70,000 miles) on a 62 plate D4. Been quoted 12k for a new engine all in. And elsewhere I got a quote for 3.5k for a rebuild of my existing engine. Seems I have a big end failure.
Disco_MIkey is a rebuild going to work given the list of bits you listed that can go wrong.

I had a big-end failure in mine last year at 89K (11reg HSE). Happened at the local indy whilst he was doing the emissions for the MoT.
Slightly lucky as it just started knocking, no major failures. After lots of angst and discussions followed his advice and went for a brand new LR half-engine and ended up also fitting some newer heads than mine which had had the inlet manifolds replaced under warranty by LR.
Cost came in total to just over £8.5K. Figured that a) I had a car worth zilch at that stage b) Wouldn't be able to buy a car as good as it was (had been?) for £8.5K so bit the bullet.

I'm sort of sitting thinking the same thing. I've taken it to my local indy specialist. What they have suggested is a full new engine for 12k all in, and I'm tempted. I reason that I know I've treated the rest of the vehicle well and it's never but once skipped a beat (intake sensors). It was worth about 18K until I heard ticking on the down change as I came up the slip from a busy dual carriageway.
I've kept the inside tidy and like my little tank. If I didn't think I needed something as big I would be downsizing but we do European trips and I like driving in an armchair and if we don't brexit it will be regular means of returning my annual wine requirement. I could probably get another for the same 12k with a few more miles, but then the engine will need more work sooner and I just won't trust it.
SWIMBO has asked for a visual whiteboard demo to explain what the options are, so I'm going to go find out how much the breaking value of land is. I'll have to put that against a recon engine, a recon of this engine and a different car....I've taken in good heart today as I've been busy but this feels like it's going to hit home tomorrow.

Disco 2 vs 3 vs 4 snapped crankshaft |
|
Hello
maybe somebody of you can help me.
Sorry for my English in advance
I want to purchase a Disco 4 and my budget allows me to buy a MY 2010 to 2012 with reasonable mileage of around 90.000.
My problem is that I am reading to much of snapped crankshaft in the 3 Liter Lion engine. And it seems that it doesnt matter mileage or bhp version. The german internet is full of this. South Africa is showing the same issues. But the internet is not a good tool if you want to have statistically valid informations.
Anyhow, a snapped crankshaft would be a ruin and in Germany more expensive than the whole car. I heard about costs from 20.000 to 30.000 Euros.
So I changed my strategy and looked for a D4 Facelift with the old 2.7 engine, MY 2010. But also here I found some, but less, posts about the same issue, seized bearings, snapped crankshaft, total engine damage.
Well, I changed again my strategy and now I am looking for a Disco 2 with TD5 engine. I know this engine very well and most of the issues are peripherical, easy to fix for me without dealer. The problem is that, if you want to get a rust free car, it takes nearly the same money as for a D4 early MY and same mileage.
I will stay on my D2 strategy unless somebody of you can tell me that the 2.7 engine is less prone tp beak down. I know the other issues of the D3 engine as EGR etc...
I dont have a problem with the minor issues as these, but I cant stay financially an engine break down on a D3 and D4 chassis due to the high costs. The V6 engine in this narrow chassis is really a problem.
So my key question is, do you think that the risk of a D3 engine is significantly lower?
Any help is really appreciated
Best Regards, Michael

Why?
I am really frustrated. I love the Land Rovers. They are not perfect, but at the same time not as boring as the german cars. The Germans are of good quality but no emotions, no style
No one who can give me the illusion that a D4 maybe something for the next years to take care of.

There are a few D4 V8 or SCV6 around every now and then on mobile.de or AutoScout24 - if you are ok with something else than diesel.

I'm on my 8th Discovery.
I had my TD5 for 11 years and then bought the D3, 3 years ago, I intended to run it for as many years as I could however the engine decided to let go.
I had decided that that was the end of Land Rovers for me and for 3 weeks it was, however after driving a Corsa and a Quashqai during that time decided you only live once and have now bought another low mileage D3.
If you have an itch, scratch it but go in with eyes wide open.
When they are going well there is no better for vehicle for me anyway
That said the D5 is as ugly as sin and I have no plans to ever set foot in one, never mind have my bum on the driving seat
Good luck whatever you decide

looks like I have to go for a TD5. My Defender was absolutely reliable and this was always important when you are towing your caravan outside your home region. The TD5 was easy to fix and with the right maintenance, no problem.
But the V engines in these small engine bays are nothing for DIY, especially outside your workshop.
Last week I saw a beautiful RRS in Bronze with low mileage and price. But then I got aware that the 3.6 V8 has issues on exhaust manifold and turbos. Exactly where you have no access. Disco Chassis ans the body must be lifted -> Dealer and a hell of money .
Its a mess but looks like I have to buy a TD5 again

Get a grip, get D4 and enjoy it. Chances are very slim that it will go bang. Do you ever not cross the road because you're worried about being hit with a bus?
I had a D3 that has done over 230,000 miles in 14 years and is well documented on here. I now have a seven year old D4 that I bought unseen from a forum member that I didn't even test drive. It has a 130,000 miles on the clock and runs as sweet as can be and did nearly 800 miles visiting family this week fully laden in mile after mile of stress free and comfortable driving. It passed its MOT last week with flying colours.
On both cars there were / are known issues but mine have never let me down over 15+ years of ownership. A D3/4 is leagues ahead of a D2. You're a long time dead so seize the moment, stop worrying about something that might never happen and buy a D4.
P.S. You're right, the D5 is so wrong. Last week some chap tried to drown his D5 because he was so embarrassed.

Thanks!
Whats is creating some confusion is that in the German Forum there are only few notes about snapped crankshaft in the D3, but a lot on the D4.
Any idea why? Is it due to sales numbers or is the risk for the D3 lower?
Best Regards Michael
