Altox unit, am i an eejit ?
Hi everybody
First ever post here
I have been reading about the installation of Altox units in your Disco 4, and most of you don´t seem to have any problem with it.
But I´m trying to help out a friend installing it to his Disco 4, and it´s not working.
So if you have the time to read this please, and maybe help me out here, I would really appreciate it.
Got an Altox WBUS-5, (not GPS version). Installed it in the back of the vehicle as supposed
Connected red to +, Black to -, and the blue to pin 2 on the Webasto (checked with an Ohm meter)
Went to a garage that activated the Park heater with a Autologic computer.
Put in the Sim card, from there I have only been using SMS text to the Altox unit
SMS the command SETTINGS2, and got the unit´s id number
Downloaded the app, and set it up on my Android phone. Set in the units Id number to the app, and other info I believe that was needed.
But from here, I´m not able to activate the Webasto.
Here below are some of the SMS text I send to the unit, and the reply I get
READ
the reply is:
HEATER OFF
GSM (0-31): 25
Voltage: 12,6V
Output: off
START:30
the reply is:
Error!
The heater does not respond to commands.
Technical info: A10
So I went back to the Land Rover garage and asked them to double-check that the Park heater settings was on. They checked and claim that it is.
Sent the SMS text
READ
the reply is:
Error!
The heater does not respond to commands.
Technical info: A10
Contacted Thomas at Altox and he was not sure what could be causing this, so I got another unit, and put that in today. Basically did just a plug and play, used the same wires/connections as before
Now, the history is this:
STATUS
I get the reply:
HEATER OFF
GSM (0-31):31
Voltage: 12,4V
Sensor temp: 0C
Output: Off
SETTINGS2
I get the reply:
ID:(the units ID number)
S"85.114.140.44","20332"
G"","",""
C3,2 P30,30
START:30
the reply is:
Error!
The heater does not respond to commands.
Technical info: A8,1
READ
Error!
The heater does not respond to commands.
Technical info: A10
START10 And here it gets weird
Didn´t get a reply for about 3 minutes,
Sent the SMS:
Status
Got the reply:
HEATER ON 7min
GSM (0-31):31
Voltage: 12,6V
Sensor temp: 0C
Output: on
Ran out to the car, checked the Webasto, it was not running
After 9 minutes, I sent the
Status
Got the reply:
HEATER ON 1min
GSM (0-31):31
Voltage: 12,6V
Sensor temp: 0C
Output: on
Still, the Webasto was not running when checked
After the 10 minutes had passed
Sent the SMS text
READ
the reply is:
Error!
The heater does not respond to commands.
Technical info: A10
Then sent the SMS
STATUS
I get the reply:
HEATER OFF
GSM (0-31):31
Voltage: 12,6V
Sensor temp: 0C
Output: Off
And this is where I´m at now.
Sorry for the long post, but this is all the info I have, if somebody of you might see the problem I have..
Please advice
Thank you

If you are using SMS have you told the altox your number? You have to set athorised numbers for the sms to work I think.
Why not just set the apn and use the app?Jaguar I-Pace HSE imminent.

I was wondering if that might be the case, although the LR garage did check twice...
I have an appointment at the LR dealer friday to have that checked (for the third time)
Do you have screenshots of what the settings look like and should be? They said that I may watch over their shoulder while the settings are checked.

Well....still have the same problem, but now we think we know why...
Apparently, this vehicle is imported from Italy, and it does not have a cold climate pack. That means no heated seats, no heated front window and no heated steering wheel....therefore there might be some modules missing that are needed to communicate with the Webasto (yes, there is a webasto in the engine comp)
Land Rover could therefore not activate the telestart in this vehicle, but they managed to get the timed heater programming active on the center screen. But nothing more.
Therefore, I believe this is not possible on this car, but might be if I connected it like I would on a Disco 3. Your thoughts on that?
when I swapped phones recently I thought I'd done everything correctly ... "proven" by the fact the altox texted me the errors. but I could not get it to accept the call so I could start the heater.
turns out it wouldn't work because I'd set up the new number as +44 7xxxxxxxxx. I switched this to 07xxxxxxxxx and it all worked.
if this is what you've done and you are concerned about losing connectivity whilst testing it, add your number in "local" format as an extra number ( the altox allows 3 numbers to be set up ).

Hogwash.....
Doesn’t matter what spec the car is, as long as the webasto heater is fitted, it will work.
If it’s not working, it’ll be down to the dealer not knowing what they need to set.Bodsys Brake Bible
