Talk of Happy Valley brings back memories of a truly tight lane in the Lakes, Sadgill. I still have nightmares about that day.

I thought we'd never get out of the gate at the bottom of that and would have to reverse all the way back up.
cheers

The only time ive ever done SF was briefly to rescue a defender that was basically no more - the river levels get bad with the sort of heavy rain, but the day before it was fine...still not driven the lane end to end...I cant remember where I joined it - I remember having to speak to a farmer to go through his farm and it being by a new (then) foot bridge.
Scrap that - that might have been Sarn Helen, which Is why we didn't go to SF...long time ago.Mike

Enjoyed SF on the PNC a couple of years back - no drama to speak of
Fair play to the Full Fat driver - not sure I'd be happy throwing that much money around lanes like that Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

As the Full Fat driver I can say that I bought the car to use it and that means on and off-road, to the tip, logging and chauffeuring. Waste of money otherwise. (It is my 15th). In the 28 years of off roading, including getting stuck overnight in parts of Wales that are no longer open, I've only ever once done damage that would not polish out with the machine. All about tread lightly (and carefully).

Hope to be able to start posting a few pics of trips with a D3. My regular off-road team consists of two D3 plus my old Freelander 1 (which is generally picked as the pathfinder such is it's capability but is being pensioned off due to age and mileage).
Looking for a 2005-ish HSE/SE any offers?

Thanks for that but as my wife will be using it as a daily driver it will have to be an auto. Not certain I agree that a manual gearbox is "better" for off-roading but certainly demands more from the driver. Have spent many years with both. Certainly for a beginner an auto can avoid the problems of failed hill climbs and stalled engines. Neither will protect you against being in the wrong gear on a descent (assuming you haven't got hill descent control). It comes down to a personal preference in the end.

I did the Happy valley one solo about 2 months ago. Tight in a few places but ok if you take it steady.
Feel free to post your pics. I love seeing Landys doing what they were built for.

So to reserect an oldish thread.
I have been invited along to do SF this June. Will I be ok with a fixed towbar?
I am not sure about going. Seeing videos of the bomb hole it looks tight and I am not sure if the reduced departure angle will cause issues. Is there a route to avoid it if needed?
I would really like to go but don't want to damage anything.
Any other lanes you could suggest around that area as well.
Thanks.D3 HSE TDV6 Auto. Bonatti Grey.

I took my d3 down strata a few months back after doing it a few times in a 90 the d3 was awesome you may knock your fixed tow bar a little the main bit as seen in picture is avoidable.
As mentioned just watch out for the water crossing as taking a different line can be the difference between a couple of ft.
I didn't take my truck up happy valley because I had a couple,of punctures the day before but it was tight in a 90 so doing it in a d3 I not sure as them dry stone walls are not very forgiving.

I have done Happy Valley in a D3. It does fit but you will need a spotter.
