I am in the process of selling my big 7.5m 3.5 ton car trailer and buying a Sankey type military trailer. It will be converted into a camping special with an option of cargo use.
It will be a wide track to start with.
I have seen models for 3/4 ton 1 ton & 2.8 tonne gvw
I assume the 3/4 and 1 ton are gross weight or can anyone tell me different?
Next can anyone give me the pro's and con's on having the heavy or light? apart from fuel consumption
I have deduced the point of the Nato swivelling hitch. Does the lightweight Sankey need a swivel hitch? and is there a difference in size between the 3 / 5 / 7 ton hitch? ie does the ring fit all?
Looking on e-bay at a used Nato tow hitch is there anything I should watch out for?
Thanks
John

The 3/4 and 1 tonne figures are payload weights and the latter is a much bigger trailer more suited to a truck than a Land Rover.
The 3/4 tonne trailers come in older narrow track and newer wide track versions. The earlier version matched the track of a Series Land Rover and the later ones a 90 or 110. The wide track is available as the Mk II with drum brakes and Mk III with disk brakes. They can be identified by individual lights on the Mk II and one piece light units on the Mk III. The Mk III also has a prominent hydraulic brake cylinder on the A frame.
The need for a rotating hitch depends on which trailer you want to tow. The Mk III wide track (and I think the Mk II as well) definitely needs a rotating hitch as it has a fixed drawbar. The earlier trailers have rotating drawbars so only need a fixed hitch.
Realistically, you only want a 3.5 tonne hitch. The bigger ones are massive and designed for the back of trucks.Darren

The 3/4 and 1 tonne Sankey's are designed for towing by the Land Rover !
The larger 1.75 tonne Sankey wide track were designed for use with the military 4 and 8 tonne cargo trucks ! ( not adviseable to tow behind the LR on public highway)
Or they was when I was in the Army

The 3.5 ton hitch can be locked so it does not rotate - that suits a trailer with a ring that does rotate. What you must never do is tow a trailer with a fixed ring with the NATO hitch locked. The trailer can turn the towing vehicle on its side - and it does!A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. Thank you for the replies.
I was chasing a 1.75ton arrows as the price looked very good. I always go for big and heavy and listening to you all, I now think its a little too heavy. I will now have a re-think and go for the smaller Sankey.
Thanks again you have saved me wasting more time and money and have learnt from your experiences.
