Whistling wind noise around driver's door

Hi All,

Has anyone else had this? We have a whistling noise (high-pitched) somewhere around the door on our Disco 4. It's a brand new, 2012 car. The dealer has had a look but not found anything.

The whistling happens at motorway speeds, and is not present on the passenger side (which suggests to me it's a fault).

I've not been able to isolate the exact point it's coming from. Any hints/tips? I have also taken a look at the seals and the door gaps, etc. Everything looks fine, so I'm not sure where it could be coming from...

Any hints gratefully received.

Thanks,

Andrew

Yes, I get it too. Dealer has replaced door seals but it made no difference.

Difficult to say as it ain't easy trying to sick your ear next to various bits of the car when on the motorway but I think it is coming from the roof rails.

I don't get it when it is raining and never below 65. It is worse in warm weather.

Swmbo swears she can't hear it and that I have gone crackers. If someone else has the same problem perhaps I haven't. I was starting to think I had tinnitus.

Mine definitely also has a slight wind / turbulence noise on drivers RH door at speeds above 110kph. A bit like the window is slightly down (which it is not).

Hmmm.... Interesting that others have this issue! Also interesting as to why it's only on the driver's side!

I think a possible way to track it down would be to use a microphone and listen to it through headphones.

I would really like to get it fixed. Wind noise I can live with, and comes with the car. A whistle? Not so sure...

I have same and its driving me nuts. That along with the GG tyre noise.

I think mine is the wing mirror. I folded them and it went away

I also notice that the drivers one was creaking when I locked it. Spreayed it with WD40 - I am no machanic and Knock on Wood it seems a little better.

May not be same as yours though

Be careful as Wd40 does bad things to the plastic bearings!

Had that on my d3 and it was either use silicon grease or setting the mirror back and forth a few times beyond the pressure point for folding. I think that the bearing in there is self lubricating, so this action sorts it out.

Only had our 2009 D4 for two weeks and I've noticed it as well but only on freeway over 100km/h. Drivers side only.

I dont believe its the rubbers they look fine and seal well.

Seems more like the design/shape of car. I particularly noticed it when there was a slight cross wind come onto the drivers side.

Cause the car is so quiet inside any kind of noise like that seems MUCH worse..lol

I have some ideas about how to track it down and will be experimenting over the next few weeks - if others could do the same it would be much appreciated! The idea is to tape up the various gaps and then drive. If the noise is gone, peel off each bit of tape until the noise returns, then you may have identified the cause!

I spoke to an engineer over the weekend Very Happy

Just picked up my brand new D4. I've definitely got this wind whistling problem too, but it's on my passenger side. Passenger of mine described it as being like the windows didn't completely seal.

Took it into the stealers today where they replaced both the seals. Problem was not resolved and they suspect it's the roof rails, had a 2010 D4 before without the full length rails and the problem wasn't there...that's where they're pointing to now anyway. Will report back in a few days. Confused

Interesting indeed... I don't have roof rails though, so it can't be those on mine!

I've done some more investigation and haven't fully narrowed it down yet. Interestingly, it doesn't happen when it's raining! Which makes testing harder as it's always raining!!!

It's been suggested to take a look at the mirror. I've taped up one of the gaps and conclusively proved it's not that. So now I need to look at others. Trouble is it started raining! (oh did I already say it was raining?) Not sure... You can tell how much I like the fact that it's always raining!

No full length roof rails on mine either - so can't be that. Likewise, I don't get any noise out of it when raining.

It is on a very long list for the dealer to attend to next week, that includes squealing brakes that can be heard easily above the radio, creaky seats and worn/faded door cards... all after just 6000 miles/6 months!

This is a very comfortable and well appointed car, but it certainly isn't holding up to have the durability that you would expect from a 'rufty tufty 4x4', let alone one that cost £50k! LR will be incurring my wrath very soon.

So - an update from me:

I visited the dealer again today and after a morning's wait (they were looking at a TMC problem), they were unable to find anything. I taped up the (vertical) gap between the mirror and its plinth and that seems to stop the noise - so it's probably something to do with that.

Trouble is, the weather is so Censored at the moment that I can't really confirm whether anything's better than it was or otherwise! I think they took the mirror apart and checked it all - they say it's exactly as it should be. I have a vain hope that they inadvertently fixed something during that process...

Anyone had any success lately?

Thanks,

Andrew

Car was in the stealers earlier this week to have a bunch of stuff attended to...

Squeaky centre console - fixed. Thumbs Up Whilst at it, found another squeaky bit of trim I hadn't noticed and that was fixed too. I now notice the squeaky trim that I didn't previously notice, Big Cry

Creaky drivers seat - lumbar support brackets greased. Fixed for 18 hours. Now not fixed and car smells like a Turkish wrestling contest.

Whistling noise - stripped B pillar and roof bar seals found to have lifted, so retightened. Been unable to go fast enough to test it yet!

Slow/unresponsive infotainment - checked, no software update available, no slower than another example in the workshop.

Squealing brakes - stripped and cleaned, copper grease applied. Fixed for 12 hours. Now not fixed!
