Whining noise when driving

Hi all.

The last couple of weeks, I have a whining noise from the car when driving in higher speeds. It only occurs when giving throttle. I have not been to the authorized service workshop yet, since they are very expensive and it costs a fortune just to have them troubleshoot. Any ideas anyone?

Best regards

Måns

How old / worn are the tyres, in miles or km's?

How old is the D4?

The tyres are only 9 months old, and i´m pretty sure it is not because of them, since the sound disappears when I let my foot of the accelerator.
The car is a 2010.
Today, I drove 300km, and tried to track where the noise comes from, but it is really hard to tell.

Sounds like it could a front wheel bearing. Certainly the symptoms. Only way to tell is to put it on a pillar lift and run the car. It'll be blatantly obvious.

Fix is not complicated but it can be a proper pain to do. Plenty on the site about it. Buy timken hubs. About £130 each.

Thanks for the tip.
If it is the bearings, wouldn´t it give a sound all the time, not just when I am on the accelerator? I got another tip that it could be the front differential. I´m having my front breaks changed in a couple of weeks, and will ask them to change oil in the front diff as well.

Update!

Update on the issue.
Changed oil in the front diff the other day, but with no result. Some say that it could be the rear prop shaft or the support bearing. Any ideas on how i can go ahead and troubleshoot this. I don´t have access to a workshop, so unfortunately, I cant lift the car.

Posted a youtube video that shows the sound.

I'd say that's coming from the transfer box. Noise gets more noticeable as the mileage increases..
I've had 4 done on various D3 and D4s over the last 10 years, and always at around 60-70k miles.
Dealers used to swap them out under warranty, but the last time they fixed the existing unit.

Thanks Matt.

The mechanic said that there seemed to be some leakage from the transfer box. Not dripping, but some oil on the outside of it. Maybe that is where i should investigate next.

How serious do you reckon the problem is? Is it safe to drive the car for some time until I can have it checked out?
Also, since you seem to have some experience of getting it fixed, is it expensive. Can a non-authorized mechanic fix it?

Best regards

Måns

Unfortunately I'm not a technician and have only ever had D3/4s under warranty, so can't advise on options on repair or replacement costs. I have driven one for over 10k miles from first hearing the noise until it got loud enough that the dealer acknowledged the issue. They didn't say if it would eventually have 'gone bang', but presume wise to have it fixed soon if you can.
Transfer box is only my educated guess though, so pls don't press on replacing it until diagnosed properly..
Would have thought someone else would be along soon with an idea on costs for you..?

I've got this too. Mine whines/ whistles between 140 and 150 km/h (87 and 93 mph) when accelerating. As soon as I remove my foot from the gas pedal, the noise goes away, back on as soon as I press the gas between those speeds. As I've only had the car a month, not sure what it is. I'll be following the thread and when I take mine into service in September I'll give some feedback as well.

Hi all!

Mechanic at my local garage is pretty sure it is the Transfer box. Does anyone know where I can buy one in the UK and have it delivered to Sweden. The spare part prices at the authorized dealer is beyond belief!

Why not leave it as it is?

A lot of D3/D4 transfer box are like yours.....

And anyhow it should be cheaper to renew/recondition yours

I had the transfer box go on my old D3 at about 180K miles and it had been used a lot for towing. It went from just perceptible noise to the point I was expecting it to go bang in only about 100 miles. I replaced it with a used one from Jon Daunter ltd in Forest of Dean . When it was out the old box was as rough as anything to turn by hand . If my experience is anything to go by, I wouldn't leave to too long to get something done
