Wheel wobble under load

Anybody had any problems with a bad wheel wobble under hard acceleration? I have had trouble with vague steering from nearly new, putting it down to the 20" wheels not being standard.

The problem is now worse and when on a motorwary, every time I accelerate, I get a bad wobble through the steering, which stops as soon as I let off the gas. It also wobbles when steering is turned slightly to either side when at speed.

ANY IDEAS

Check the load rating of your tyres, D3 needs 112, a lot of 20" tyres are only 107 rated, okay for RRS.

Under load rating is unlikely to generate a wobble.

The first obvious answer might be balancing ...but if it's only under acceleration then it could also be a driveshaft issue. Get get your stealer to check it out Thumbs Up

DG, I agree with your thoughts, but I've also experienced a V8 that tried to throw me off the road went it was opened up but behaved like a Sunday driver when driven normally. A new set of Pirellis and it was cured.

Donald I don't wish to give an impression of disagreeing out of hand ...it's just that even with tyres being specced as under the D3 load rating in a legal sense...the manufacturing margin for 107's should provide that they are in fact technically capable of dealing with the D3's weight....hence my suspicions in other areas Wink

Maybe a slightly buckled alloy - especially as you are running larger wheels....

On my other car, none of the wheels are still fully true Evil or Very Mad . the tyre fitter said it is very common on heavy cars with wide wheels, as

"I bet you straddle them speed bumps that are 3 lumps in t'road don't you. Everyone does, it just means that the weakest part of the alloy is taking all the load of the car - knackers the alloys mate

Might be worth checking

I had an 'egg' on an old tyre/car once - just a slightly raised profile. Hardly noticeable when viewing, but gave me a wobble at certain speeds.

could be down to steering damper (or lack of), as the RRS uses a damped steering rack (required for running 20's), and the D3 doesnt have this. It would appear that the D3 non-dampened rack is borderline for running 20's, some its OK (and quite a few members are running fine), whilst others (me included) couldnt get a satisfactory wobble free ride (and I had my rack changed and it still didnt fix it). Its a Censored (or lottery), as the 20's look great.
