Roadworks with mile after mile after mile ad infinitum of words for these stupid motorways with NO-ONE working. They’re roadworks not roadshirks. Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Thinking specifically of the M4 from today, and the M6 on Monday.

Adaptive cruise control is your friend (and is good for your mental health) when confronted by umpteen miles of roadworks.

Your rant is, however, fully justified. If works are taking place in a 2-3 mile stretch at any one time, why close off 20-30 miles? Thumbs Up

The variable limits were in place from well before a Reading until I turned off for the M25. Agreed ACC would be ideal but just made do with the standard CC in Skippy. On the M6 the signs said they were adding technology, I’m assuming they’re also inventing it while the limits are in place.

Not that I want to go to warp, I normally cruise at 60mph, but it’s a PITA when everyone is doing the same. Sad

Could be waiting for this Question
No new smart motorways are being opened until SVD technology has been installed. Stopped Vehicle Technology, existing Motorways should all have it installed by next summer.

Temporary Traffic Orders (TTO) are not that easy to get (especially motorways) and comprise a lot of red tape so trying to get them can be time consuming and costly for many small sections.

Traffic Management (especially nowadays with requirements for hard temporary containment) is extremely expensive and time consuming and doing that for short stretches prolong the works program and involves more danger for the works operatives having to go out on many occasions instead of a few times.

Program constraints may be that only certain operations can only be carried out concurrently at various locations and the availability of plant and materials. Also the constraints of labour working and moving to different locations after another specialist operation has completed etc.

This is just a brief summary.

makes sense.

What I don't get, and what riles me is the number of times roads are shut round here. They'll often shut a road, with a diversion taking 5 miles or more, just to dig a hole on one side of the road. If I ignore the road closed and drive through, invariably there is nothing actually blocking the road at all.
In days past, a road works sign (chap digging with an umbrella) would have been put up either side of the works, and people would drive carefully round the obstruction.

Anglia water did a repair on a B road last Monday, it took 1/2 a day, the road closed signs, with 5 miles of diversions, stayed in place all week until I contacted Anglia Water directly.

My wife has had a broken ankle for a week now (and a broken big toe on the other foot). The bones are displaced by an inch and need pinning. The hospital won't consider admitting her until she has a Covid test but won't accept the results of lateral-flow tests. She has had both vaccination shots. Fifty mile round-trip to have a test. Evil or Very Mad

What's the point of handing out lateral-flow test kits and the Test'n'Trace app? Reading between the lines of what was said (if that's possible) there may be background suspicions that people are getting others to take the tests for them!

They did the same here "road closed for 5 days for patching works" ... meaning a detour right round the other side of the village... and yet the works were done in a morning with no roads actually closed... signs were still up though..

The worst part I can't actually notice a difference from before and after Laughing

Strange as when I was admitted for appendicitis in December there was no test done until I was actually on the ward.. they never did tell me the result but I think I can guess...

Lateral flow tests are testing for a different thing than other test

The vaccine hasnt yet proven it stops you passing on covid even if it doesnt make you ill (its thought it does)

Vaccine and LFD doesnt identify variants like the hospital might want

Same in the small village my mum lives in - The 'main road' through heart of village closed and the official diversion is about 4-5 miles to approach village from opposite side. If you know the village you can do a left-right-right-left-right-left-left type diversion down tiny roads OR just ignore it because the road isn't closed, they've been digging some small holes in the pavements. It was like that for three weeks and at no time was the road access actually compromised..... Rolling Eyes

I'm afraid to say I generally ignore the road closed signs, because the roads are not normally blocked. Any time after 4pm there is never a road worker there anyway!

I think that might invalidate your insurance though? Certainly, ignoring a sign can count against people who hydraulic an engine driving through a ford and expect a pay-out.

Had the same in our village. They were doing some resurfacing so approached the village from one end and was told the road was closed. Got sent to the other end of the village and met with another road closed sign!! In the end I just ignored the road closed signs. Got some funny looks from the road workers but I just ignored them.

My Mum has just come out of hospital after a fiver week stay, after having COVID tests every few days, after two weeks in she tested positive, you don’t have to take COVID, in, they can give it to you.
