Water pipe problem

I was on my way to Swaziland yesterday morning enjoying the beautiful countryside when all hell broke loose.... "Engine coolant low" Icon flashed, red triangles and all the bings possible...

I pulled off immediately and switched off. Checked the coolant, and saw the level was about 1cm from the full mark. I could smell the alien-blood and saw some on the left hand side of the plastic sound cover. Started the car but could not see anything weird. There was a petrol station about 500 meters further where I pulled in to fill the reservoir - it took about 200ml. After revving the motor I saw a very faint spray from the engine to radiator top water pipe... found it - it chafed through on the plastic sound damper.

Long story short, the pipe was replaced, ensuring that is way clear from the sound damper....

I am glad that the major bells rang out at the slightest loss of water... engine trouble avoided successfully.

I saw it many times, mine included when brand new first time I open the engine bay, sound damper rubbing to the pipes from the radiator (included vaccuum one at bottom).

Repositionate the pipe by pressing the clamps with plyers and slight rotate it. For the vacuum type, dremel the sound damper a bit, freeing space for "dancing". If you are careful it looks original.

All perfect since.

glad you catch it on time Thumbs Up

Re: water pipe problem

Had the same problem with the top pipe nearly wore through replaced under warranty got home it was rubbing again so ground cover carefully so pipe does not rub. Cannot tell if you take your time. I would advice owners to check there's whilst topping up screen wash bottle.
