Upper tailgate FET module
Hi, I'm having an issue with the tailgate. The upper part has failed and i have narrowed down the fault (I think) to the FET module. I suspect the transistor has blown. Could someone tell me where it is located?
In the Haynes manual it says it is in the passenger fusebox d1 "upper tailgate FET".
Any pointers would be great...
Thanks in advance,
Phil

Usually its the mech in the lower door is the problem. Anything on the fuse panel needs great care and attention and is best left alone.
Look on this site for problems with rear door problems and you will generally find that the latch cable has broken. Shows how to get it open and how to fix.

Hi, it isn't the mech as I have tested these. The actuator works when given 12v manually. Also the switch is working fine. There is a constant 8v on the feed to the actuator which makes me think it is the FET module. If the transistor in this module has died then it could be the cause.
Also, if i can find the module i can test the cable end too end.
Just need to know where the FET module is?
Thanks,
Phil

Just looked at the wiring diagram, looks like it’s in the fuse box behind the glove box ???

The FET is in the cjb and can’t be changed.
Try making the FET drive a relay coil
And then relay drive tailgate.
Either as a test or cheap fix or temporary solution.

A lot of these modules actually switch a ground. The FET is G170 on the panel behind the glove box

Hi Pete
Funny enough was just looking for the connector, ref C0586 , on the CJB and what the FET meaning was

Also see there’s a connector under the LH seat 3007/8 , that is between the CJB and tailgate

Thk u kind sir
See there’s a connector under the LH seat , wonder if there’s a bad connection, didn’t even know it was there untill I looked on the wiring diagram

Hi, an FET is a Field Affect Transistor, it acts similar to a relay but with no moving parts (coil, contacts, etc.). Basically you apply the current source to pins 1&2 and the "on/off" signal to pin 3.
I think the issue with my FET is that it is damaged and half on. Unlike a relay it is gradual, the more current you apply to pin 3 the more you get through pins 1&2, it is a bit like a water tap, pin 3 is the valve. My broken one is stuck slightly open.

Many thks and will have a read of that , very grateful
Also see there are some connectors under the LH seat , alas don’t know if that may be of any use to u

Hi, could you point it out in a photo. I have looked at all the diagrams and also at my fuse box but can't find G170 anywhere. Is it hidden under a panel or behind something?
Thanks,
Phil

Hi
I assume G170 is under the connector C0586R , listed the pics to show the location of that connector
If u look on the electrical diagram , following the wire it will give the connector number
Alas don’t know how much help that is
Picture is number 2, just zoomed and took a screenshot to make life easier to show where it was
The more knowledgeable members will be able to help more
