Turbo actuator stuck

Hi,

So I had an issue with severe lack of power setting off and a notification there was an engine problem (can't remember exact wording). So having done a bit of research I figured it was probably the turbo actuator that was stuck.

Today I tried first off through the wheel arch, but ended up stripping the battery tray out to get access. The actuator was stuck solid, but after about 3 hours of lubricating and moving it, it seemed the actuator was moving fairly freely, not knowing what it's like new I had to hope it was free enough.

Took it for a spin, and TBH if anything it feels worse.

So any advice? Do I need a new actuator, if so how hard are they to swap, or is it a new turbo? Any help much appreciated.

Thanks Paul

More a new turbo.

At ignition on and off the rod should move itself back and fourth (except 2004 cars)

Wynn’s vvt cleaner in a purple bottle is well worth a try.

In the mean time, leave the rod in the middle position is a good compromise

Hiya

Hope u don’t mind me adding , but mines also a 2005 and originally the turbo actuator arm didn’t move when turning the ign on/off , had to get a software patch from Patrick at gap

After adding the update onto the iid and then the D3 The arm would then move as Pete describes , think it was called fast lane and cost me around £25.00

However if the engine has been remapped it can overwrite it

Plus when I first had issues , where the air inlet pipe joins the turbo I found a broken jubilee clip , accessed via the wheel arch after removing the heat shields

Hope that also helps

Cheers Gary I'll have a look into that. I've ordered the Wynns, so fingers crossed that'll help too.

Ur so welcome and plus 1 to the wynns, alas I’ve got all my intercooler and air intake pipes off at the moment so if u need pics etc plse let me know

Also if that clip is broken/ loose ur see traces of oil, I found the perfect size is 45-60mm and 12mm wide

Hope all goes well and it’s just that stuck turbo , plus to see if the actuator moves on the ign cycle

Ps, enclosed a pic showing the narrow and wider clip which fits better , alas I made the mistake at the time of fitting a narrow one

I wider hose clamp may have less clamping force as its spread over a larger area

Many thks , it’s just that I fitted a narrow one a few years back and got slight traces of oil again leaking from that hose so I just thought I would try the wider one this time

On the silicone hoses I’ve used T bolt clamps

Thks again and got me wondering now with regards to the wider clamp as certainly don’t wish to give the wrong information

I think it will be ok, it looks like a decent clamp.

So, I took everything out again to try to put the actuator into the middle, and it's really really loose, to the point I'm now thinking it may have snapped.

What is the likelihood of that happening?

What can happen sometimes, is that the actuator has come detached form the ball (turbo)

Happened to someone on here, and by some miracle they managed to re attach it.

Did things move on ign on and off ?

Maybe you can see the attachment in this pic (or elsewhere on this forum)

Plus 1 ^^^^^^

Does this also help regarding pictures as found some old ones showing the rod

Remember that Pete with regards to someone getting the rod back on , wonder if it could be done by removing the oil feed pipe, battery tray etc and do it from the top

Then maybe using an angled prybar type screwdriver to push the rod onto the clip ???
