Serpentine belt failure

Just had a very tentaive drive home with the engine making very belt is being shredded noises.
Only about 5 miles from home, and had to risk it to get home! Lots of Censored Censored at the traffic!

Got back, pulled the disco on to the drive and broke out the socket set.
Serpentine belt is fubar and the double tensioner is Censored , it's not the bearing that's gone, but the bottom spring bit.

Something isn't right Shocked

Now I need to get to the LR dealer in the morning and get me some parts sharpish!!
All in all a pretty crappy day Big Cry

Does anyone know the best way to get that Censored Censored viscous fan off!
is it just a 32mm spanner and a big hammer? or something more refined Laughing

Mine did exactly the same as that on my way back from Glastonbury, I first noticed it about 25 miles from home and it was late and I'd been behind the wheel for 8 hours so carried on taking it steady, opened the bonnet next morning Censored !

I left the fan on to do mine as I didn't have the tools, It did increase the swearing but I managed it in the end.

FYI, Belt was £18,54 and tensioner £43,59 so not as bad as could be expected....

Cheers Bodsy, but I think I'm going to have to go down the same route as Borg as I need the car fixed tomorrow morning!

Borg, are the the prices from the stealers or somewhere else?
Like i said, I've got to fix it first thing in the morning!!

i'm also expecting many Censored Censored , just like getting the Censored thing off in the first place.

I've also got to try to get the bits of belt from the bottom of the engine bay! That should be fun!

Its a 36mm spanner - but you need to lock the pulley - I've got exactly what Bodsy has suggested coming soon Thumbs Up

It can be done with a cold chisel and a sharp smack with a lump hammer, but does damage the bolt.

But the belt can be done with the fan on. Thumbs Up

Shocked Don't fancy hitting it with a cold chisel Shocked

32...36, what's 4mm between friends! glad you told me the right size though, don't know where I got 32 from, need to learn to read more closely Embarassed
Fan on is the only option at the mo, I managed to get the old belt off, so the theory is that the new one should go back on!

Just got to remember to put all of the bits back Whistle

We'll have to see how it goes and how long it takes seeing as though I haven't done any belts for about 15 years!
I think the last thing I did engine work on was a Corsa!

It was my local Indy who get all the bits from the local landrover stealer and I buy them at list price so not too bad and saves going 40 mile round trip to the stealers. Everything was in proper landrover packaging anyway!

I was concerned it was the alternator bearings or the air con pump so I was almost happy when I realised it was the tensioner!

I'll see what Guy Salmon have to say in the morning but I was the same as you, Will.

I was worried it was the water pump going or the air con compressor going, just relieved it's something simple to repair!! Whistle

Just need to get the rear upper wishbones replaced now Rolling Eyes
Going to find an indy for that through!

Btw, without teaching egg sucking etc, the new tensioner will have a 3/8 square for a breaker bar or a ratchet and you can use that to hold it back while you put the belt on.
