TPMS or No TPMS for second set of wheels used for off road |
|
Hello, I'm in the process of acquiring a set of 5 used wheels for my D3 which will be fitted with larger, very aggressive tread and used as a second set for off roading here in the states.
My question is about the TPMS. My current daily use wheels have TPMS but do I need them or would I want them for my off road wheels? I've tried to do some research here on the forum but haven't seen anyone with this question. It seems like without TPMS in the wheels I'd see a yellow warning light in the console. Is this super annoying? Is it possible to "cost effectively" turn off this warning light. Pro's vs Con's? Anyone?
If the off road wheels are fitted with TPMS what happens when I get to the trail and pressure down to about 20PSI or so? Will I be stuck with this warning light anyway?

Is TPMS wheel dependant? Cant you just reset it each time you put new wheels on it/change the tyre pressure? This way no warning light unless there is a problem. Club Narpy Torch

From experience, yes you will get the amber light if the wheels don't have sensors..is it annoying, yes. If the wheels have sensors will you get the light at low pressures, yes.
Also not all wheel sizes will take the sensors. The 17s for example (which might be best for off road) don't take sensors.

Good to know. Does anyone know if the warning light can be disabled somehow?
The US versions of LR3's have 18" or larger, there are no 17" here in the states (except for the next person who says I'm running 17" and I live in...). 1998 Discovery LSE - Gold, 249,000+ miles, completely stock
