2008 08 Discovery 3 with 111k on the clock |
|
Hi – this is my first post here. I hope to buy a Discovery 3 for towing a horse trailer, but because I want a manual, there is limited choice in my price range in my area. I have found a 08 XS (with leather) with 111,000 miles on the clock for £14,000. It’s has a main dealer full service history and the cambelts were changed at 95,000. I’ve not checked the paperwork yet, but the exhaust looks new and I could see something shiny and new looking through the front nearside wheel arch. There is not much rust underneath too, unlike one I saw last week that looked like it lived in the sea.
Is there anything else in particular I should look out for, eg is the air suspension likely to become faulty soon and is it expensive to fix, etc.? Thanks.

Hi Lid,
Firstly, welcome to the gang. I have an 08 XS also. There is lots to go wrong yes, but you limit that somewhat with the full service history and the fact the cam belt has been changed. Get a decenty warranty, preferably thrown in with the price. Price sounds about right.

Thanks for the replies.
As for what I am looking for, I am aiming for 06 or newer. It doesn't' have to be any particular variant - I saw a standard model 56 this morning, but I was put off by a strong cigarette smell, all 4 tyres quite well worn, a broken wing mirror and rusty spare. All fixable, I know, but I am hoping for something tidier from the start. It also didn't appear to have had a service from 32k to 48k - does that matter?
I tried to buy an 06 one last week, but it was sold in the few hours between when I tried it and when I rang to offer!

not sure on the reason for a manual when the auto has the option of "manual override" ie you can use the auto box like a manual
I tow ALL day long, 3500kg car trailer, 570k miles (of which 380k was my own miles) and a lot of others here tow using autos....
search the forum for "manual or auto" threads for further confirmation/assurance

My first D3 was an auto to tow a caravan, after a couple of thousand iles (my ownership) the clutch failed at 12000 miles, new clutch fitted and that failed within 300 miles!!!!!!! Then got an auto an have not nor would not go back to manual. Auto is a far better drive in my opinion. MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange
MY15 D4 HSE Kaikoura Stone
MY12 D4 HSE Nara Bronze Sold and gone
MY11 D4 HSE Stornaway Grey Sold and gone
D3 S spec Silver Sold and gone
Tow bar, full length roof bars, side steps, tow bar storage unit, surround camers.

I meant to ask about the tyres. It has 4 nearly new Grabbers fitted. The guy selling it says they are all season tyres. I am not sure what model grabber they are, but is this right? Thanks.

Something is wrong with my internet connection. It keeps dropping and these multiple posts resulted. I can't delete my own posts; maybe I will be able to when I have made more posts, but until then i hope a kind moderator will do the honours.

Well I bought it and it so far I am very happy, even though I can't get it into my garages (I knew this though).
I need rubber floor mats and I'd like to get one of those big, rubber boot mats too. Can anyone recommend a good place to get these from please?
As for towing a horse trailer, the detachable towing hook is missing, but I have read a number of reports saying this towing set up can break. Should I just buy a replacement detachable hook, or should I get an additional full two bar set-up fitted?
Thanks
