Fuel injectors

Hi everyone, I suffered a loss of power and oil leak recently in my Disco 3. A local mechanic told me it was the head gasket which I didn’t believe so I took it to land rover. I was happy to hear that it may not be the head gasket but the injectors are leaking. LR quoted £2800 to change them, thing is I saw ones on eBay for £250 and wondering would anyone advise me changing them myself?? I am not a total novice as I had little experience with smaller less complicated cars. Big Cry

Hi and welcome to the forum!

The injectors aren't that expensive, around £20 a go i think,as for removal its touch and go if they come out successfully due to skinny M8 heads, it'd be worth getting them tested to find out which ones are knackered and if you can get some replaced its better than none! The ones nearest the bulkhead i believe are a no go due to being set too far back in the engine bay,so fingers crossed for you its not those ones that are leaking!Get your post count up and drop geoff. on here a pm,he's a helpful chap and has recently changed some!

That diagnosis sounds a bit suspect to me. First of all, a sudden leak and loss of power would indicate maybe a fuel leak? are you sure it was oil?

I am not familiar with the intricacies of the injectors on a D3, but I do know that they can leak internally, which can melt your pistons. In internal leak if caught early enough can be fixed, but I think the LR dealer is trying to change all 6 for that sort of money.

I would get a knowledgeable person to give a second opinion.

Thanks for the welcome and quick replies, it all started off when I suddenly lost power, I had to press down almost fully on the throttle to get it moving slowly. I eventually made it home and call a local mechanic who took it around the corner and came back and said its leaking oil, which I found suspicious as there was on oil spots on my drive although it was really low. He then did his diagnostics which he said was the head gasket, but after reading a post on this forum I became more suspicious and decided to take it to land rover as I had warranty direct on cover, but they said that because of ware and tire they are not covering it. LR said that it is 3 injectors that is leaking along with the wiring harness which is not included in the price, but thinking about it they probably really want to replace all. I just thought that I can give it a go?

I find it highly unlikely that three injectors would all give up at the same time. Even on three cylinders the car would move rather quicker than you describe. Confused

Hi guys,
Just a quick update in my trials and patience. I took it to a injector specialist who conducted some checks on it and he diagnosed it as the returns line from the injectors, he said that he conducted a pressure test on the injectors and couldn’t find anything with it them besides the returns line leaking.

I am having them changed and hopefully that would solve my issues, fingers crossed.

Frudo - with respect I find your last post a little confusing.

I assume the diagnosis was a problem with the injector return line and that he couldn't find anything wrong with the injectors, other than the return line leaking.

You then refer to "them" being changed - what is "them"; the return line (or is there more than one) ?

Do please tell us who the expert is - it's always useful to know of local specialists.

Oh sorry if I didn’t make it clearer, the guy pressure tested all the injectors via the return lines by hooking up some little canisters on it started the engine and gave it some revs and the only fuel that came out was from the returns line which supposed to happen. He said that if the injectors were bad it would have filled up the little canisters that he placed on the injectors but it wasn’t.

Apparently there is a little clip on the return line that clips into each injector and they had been warn and leaking but the good news is not from around the injectors.

My concern now is that he said that one of the injectors is popping off the clip from the return line, which I read somewhere that it could be the injector that’s bad but he assures me it’s not (time will tell)

The garage that I am using is called ‘Garddian’ it is specialist garage in stoke the website is http://www.garddian.com/ as the car broke down up there.

Oh and by 'them' i meant i am having the both return lines changed in each side.

Fuel Return Line Pops off

Hi guys,
I’m lost now, my issue turn out to be the Fuel cooler had a small crack on it. I had to replace it which cost me £430.00. this seemed to solve to problem for a while however this morning I notice smoke coming out from under the bonnet, on looking at it on of the fuel return lines is starting to pop off again. I am lost now and don’t know what to do?? And suggestions?? Big Cry Censored

The fuel cooler itself is £132.16 from John Craddock, possibly cheaper elsewhere:-

Sounds like a lot of labour to fit it?
