I have one of these and I still have a spare wheel! I had the old style on my RRS and never lost a wheel, I am a huge fan of them.
The new style one I have has been on the spare for about 12 months.
This morning my trusted independent was swapping the wheels for my winter set (before I set off for the Alps) and he found that one of the pins that holds the new RLD plate in place was stuck fast with corrosion and crap. He said it took a fair bit of effort in the workshop to punch out and more importantly more force than would be possible at the road side in a wheel change scenario.
Probably i have just become lazy with all our mod cons etc but I will be lubricating the pins at intervals, especially in the winter.
Treated mine when fitted, also put a sheet of clear plastic, cut to shape to place between protector and wheel to prevent a reaction between the 2 metals.
Hi all sorry about that but now and as nothing to do with the ally pines i now do them in hard plastic so no chance of any corrosion but just put some grease on them wont do any harm .

Thanks Ray. Huge fan of these protectors....
FYI my independent thinks that another way of stealing the wheel is by turning it round and round until the wire tension causes it to snap. I think that's unlikely as I can't turn the spare wheel an inch once it is snug against the underside of the car...

Hi Ray, what size are the pins please? I'll just change mine to plastic, easier to buy the new ones first to save dropping the wheel twice mate.
