Drive shaft lateral movement rattle |
|
Hello all,
Could I please clarify my suspicions are correct.
Discovery 3 2005 2.7 tdv6.
Front end rattle/ knocking, late last year I had the upper & lower front arms replaced due to being worn, while I was there I replaced the anti roll drop links & bushes, it was then 4 wheel aligned.
Recently I have had an intermittent front end rattle that has no rhythm or reason when it happens, ok if I hit a succession of small pot holes it generally does it but it can also happen when cornering with no apparent pot holes.
Having crawled round under the car everything seems tight & nothing moves when I pry bar the bushes / ball joints. The only thing I can find is the front drive shafts have lateral movement that makes it rattle (I can't seem to upload a video). Could this be the cause? The right side seems to do it more than the left side & the rattle does go to both sides of the car but predominantly the right side.
Thanks for your help

Could just need new grease. Any holes in the gators? Maybe the nuts on end of shaft are not done up correctly so the shaft moves in the wheel hub.

Thanks for the reply, as I need the car to be reliable (ok ok I know!!), I'm replacing the full shaft including both inner & outer CV joints, there is no sign of any grease leaking or any splits in the rubbers. Once the old ones are out I will have a look & see if I can see any obvious reason for the rattle.
