Vredestein Wintracs

Just been down to AJS Tyres to add another one of these superb tyres this time to a spare 19" rim in place of my OE spare.

After reading the many posts about these tyres on this forum and doing some fairly exstensive online research, I decided to try a set of these on my new MY2012 D4. An 1800 mile odd round trip to the Highlands would be a fair first test I thought.

First things first, I noticed no significant increase in road noise over the OE Pirelli Scorpions either on the motorway or on the twisting A and B roads of Glencoe and beyond. The weather conditions ranged from sunny to gentle rain to torrential and horrific. The temperature range was between 14c down to about 4c over the four days. Throughout all of this, the tyres behaved impeccably. Always providing precise feedback and confidence in the level of grip available, which incidentally, was phenomenal! Mr. Green

Given my background in driver training and maybe this was me being a little bit pedantic, I wanted to do rolling brake tests at various speeds and in various conditions. The results were superb. Three tons of Disco, kit and dog being hauled up to a safe, consistent and remarkably short stopping distance every time. A marked improvement on the Pirellis IMHO.

So to sum up, Wintracs aren't especially cheap but the benefits of having them on far outweigh the potential pitfalls of cheaper inferior tyres. I'm looking forward to the proper winter with more confidence in what we all know is already an incredibly capable vehicle.

I am not being paid or sponsored by Vredestein or AJStyres to say this. This is my own independently formed opinion.

Safe driving Smile

I'm on my second set and they are fantastic, both in the snow and ice of a typical British winter and the 30+ degree heat of a southern France summer. Thumbs Up
Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills Smile

I recently replaced my Wintracs after more than 40,000 on them, and now have Pirelli ATRs fitted (19"). I much preferred the Wintracs, and will go back to them once the ATRs are worn out.

@ridgeback, They're different types of tyre; winter and all terrain, so designed for different usage. Why do you prefer the Wintracs?

Recent AE test of winter tyre manufacturers out of 8 ....Pirelli came 3rd ...Vredstein came 6th.

I hereby declare I shall be sticking with .....drum roll please.....Pirelli Bow down Smile

I'm probably being slightly unfair on the ATRs, as I also changed to RRS 9J rims at the same time, but the Wintracs were slightly quieter (not that the ATRs are in any way noisy I hasten to add) and the steering was also lighter. I've still not got to the bottom of why the steering feels heavier, as the offset of the RRS rims is the same as my previous HSE alloys. All just personal opinions based on my useage.
