Grabber AT on the rain and ESP

My Disco 3 has been my daily drive for about 3 years now. It came with Pirelli PZeros, and I have fitted 4 new Pirelli Pzeros about 30.000km. Never had the ESP light come on.

I now fitted 2 new General Grabbers AT in the back axle, and moved the 1/2 worn Pirelli Pzeros to the front. My steering now feels extremely light at speed (140/150 kph), and the car seems a bit unstable.

Yesterday did 100km on moderate rain/wet surface and had the ESP light on very frequently, on corners that never posed a problem on the PZeros!

Are the Grabbers that different from PZeros on wet tarmac (for the worse)? Or maybe they grip too much in the back, compared to the mid-life Pzeros, and that is making the ESP go bananas??

All I know is that it doesn't feel safe to drive in the rain anymore.. Big Cry Big Cry

is that because youve got two different types of tyres on - have you tried it with Grabbers all round ?

I would be interested to know as Im about to change D4 to grabbers - however, i run Cooper STs and STTs on the D3 and never had the DSC light come on in the rain on tarmac

I would think it may be down to having different tyres on each axle, I have Grabber AT's all round and haven't managed to get the esp/dsc light to come on yet.

Duncan, I was trying to get a bit more miles from the Pzero before getting 2 more Grabber AT's,
but I won't wait anymore. One thing I value is road safety, and I don't feel safe driving like this.

Ah, and I found a place that sells them at 128 £ each, fitted, which for what I have been seeing is a bit of a bargain!

It sounds like the pressures could be too high in front, sure you did, but check you adjusted pressures when swapping rear to front, as that will give the similar to what you are experiencing

Actually lespes, you're spot on! I've bought today a tire pressure gauge for my compressor. I did told the guys at the tire shop to check the pressures, but it might just be over-inflated, wrecking the ride of the car.

Thanks for your inputs guys, nothing goes unanswered or unsolved here!

I looked out my sitting room window the other day and saw a chap walking round my Disco bending down and looking at it.

I thought maybe he'd bumped it so I rushed out and asked if I could help him, turns out he was looking at my Grabber AT2's cause he like the look of them. His Rangie was parked opposite with Grabber AT's on and he said he hated them as per previous post he found they drifted a lot and said in the wet they were awful. Apparently he lives way up a forrest track and again said they were no good in autumn or winter.

That kind of scared me off the AT because I was thinking of getting them when the AT2's wear out. Now like most I'm left wondering but at least I have a good while before D day comes round Shocked Smile

Could well be that this FFRR owner needed to check his tyre pressures. A block tread pattern is always going to be less "grippy" on wet roads, but the GG AT's should be at home on a forest track!

Well I've checked the pressures: had 2,5 bar all round. Lowered the pressure in the front to 2,3 bar (Pzeros) and left the back at 2,5 bar (GG AT), but right now it's a beautiful sunshine outside.. will report when it rains again.

I've also got At's on all 4 corners and never had the fairy lights on ?

I also had Scorpions on for about 35K before that and never had them on either

I know you said you value road safety but not that much surely if you are squeezing another few quid out of old knackered tyres.

The PZero's get dreadfully vague towards the end of their usefull life and begin to wear very quick at the end, mine started to wander in the tram lines and on the same journey it rained, the ride was that bad at that point i made the decision to change ASAP.

I think you will be happy with the AT's all round, i certainly am.

Unnecessary quote removed

The Pzeros I have are still legal, but the ride of the Disco simply is not, even with the pressure adjusted!!! So 2 new GG AT ordered, will fit them next Saturday!
