hi all ive got some 17 inch rims for my disco 3 i need a little help or some feed back to over come the snow what size and make does anyone recomend thanks

I'd stick with the standard size, see the wiki link above. You'll not get any speedo, insurance or clearance issues and a narrower tyre is better in the snow.
As for tyres, it depends if you need to drive off-road. If you don't I'd definitely go for a winter/cold weather tyre. It really depends what's still available as they've been very popular this year.
If like me, you do need to go off road, then an All Terrain tyre is the best compromise. Winter tyres clog with mud very quickly, so pretty useless off road. But an AT tyre will not give you the same braking capability on icy/snowy roads as a Winter tyre, so it's all about driving accordingly.
I swear by Pirelli ATR's and I've yet to hear or read about an AT tyre that will better them (other than initial price). But I don't know if they're available in the right 17" size.

New Grabber AT is available in 245/70/17, tiny bit bigger but won't have any negative affect and seems to be a great all-rounder. £145 a corner via Black Circles 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

If it were me, I'd still prefer to stick to OE size, but if you don't then tell your insurance company as I've heard of a couple of cases where non standard size tyres have been an issue.
From memory Cooper Discovery ATR and Toyo Open Country are available in 235-70-17 and the Coopers should be about £120 fitted. I've never used either, but heard good things about both.
No idea what Winter tyres are available in 235-70-17, but someone will be along shortly who will.
