Tyres filled with Nitrogen!!
What's that all about then???
Been searching for a new set of tyres recently and noticed that Kwik Fit will fill your tyres with nitrogen for £1 each, claiming it increases road holding and increases fuel effieciency by 5%.
Any informed opinions about whether this is a load of cack or credible. I'd love to add 5% to my average mpg of 21.2. Badda bing.......How you doin'?

Reduced corrosion – because unlike air there's no moisture in pure nitrogen
Slower rate of pressure loss – because nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules (which make up 21% of compressed air)
One assumes the corrosion only occurs on steel wheels so the first one's out for all cars with alloys
Second one... according to Wikipedia...
Molecular size
Most molecules are far too small to be seen with the naked eye, ... . The smallest molecule is the diatomic hydrogen (H2), with a length of 0.74 Ã….[5] Molecules commonly used as building blocks for organic synthesis have a dimension of a few Ã… to several dozen Ã…
And how big is an Å ? The ångström or angstrom (symbol Å) is an internationally recognized unit of length equal to 0.1 nanometre or 1 × 10−10 metres - put it this way, you'd have to line up 10 MILLION of them to get to 1mm wide
Oh and by the way, Nitrogen is 1.55 and Oxygen 1.52 - a difference of less than 2% of only 20% anyway

Maybe we could all fill our tyres with carbon dioxide and help save the planet?
Seriously, was the nitrogen fill not introduced to get an increase in thermal conductivity?A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

I must admit that I do fill my tyres with nitrogen; not on my Disco but my track car. The heat generated on track makes the tyre pressures change significantly and i've found that this effect is lessened by the use of nitrogen. However this is all undone as soon as I decide to inflate the tyres at all at the circuit as i've not found many places with Nitrogen bottles to hand!
On a road car such as a Disco it'll be a waste of time.
