17 inch AT v winter tyres 20 inch |
|
Hi all I would just like to introduce myself I have just purchased a Disco 3 manual in black with 20 inch stormer wheels and I wanted to join the forum as it seems to be packed full of land rover enthusiasts with a lot of info I think I will be reading for months. I was looking through some of the threads to do with tyre / wheel choice as there seems to be many different options and indeed opinions. I am unsure whether to keep the 20 inch with a winter tyre or down size wheels to 17 inch and run with BF Goodridge TA tyres which I ran on a Hilux last winter very successfully. I live on the side of a very step mountain and if we get the same winter as last year then the standard tyres will just not cope although I am looking forward to trying the disco out in the extreme weather as they have a very good rep.
So I am wondering what some of you more exsperianced disco owners think or indeed if any of you run on the 17 inch in winter and switch back for the rest of the year.
Also does anyone have a set of 17 inch wheels for sale.
Thanks in advance for any advice and help you can give.

If it gets as bad as last winter I would think about investing in a pair of snow chains that you can put on and remove quickly and easily. It maybe worth a phone call to AJS for some advice on which winter tyre for the size you're running. Club Exped trailer

Theres more choice in 17s and you wouldn't want to put a ding in your 20's then there is changing tyres all the time, easier to do wheels as a whole. Take a look at ebay, usually plenty of OEM 17s on there, bide your time, we managed to get 4 wheels (with very used tyres) for £100 although they can go for an awful lot more. you can get the latest style Grabber AT's in 275/45x20, and Cooper LTZ's, plus quote a few (Perelli, Wintrac, etc) winter spec tyres in this size as well if you want to keep your 20's on.

Welcome GerryMac and nice to have someone from Derry in the forum !!
Such a lovely place, I have many fond memories (albeit from a while back) - my mother was a Derry girl !!
Tell me - can you still drive on the beach at Buncrana ??

Thanks for the advice lads it is a tuff call but I think I am gona pull on a set of 17 for winter and swap out for 20 the rest of year. i think with the hill i need to access daily in those conditions i will need the 17 with deeper tread for extra grip but I will post my findings of how it works out.
Thanks for the welcome Steve technically you can still access the beach along with a few others here although I would never do such a thing of coarse lol
Fantastic forum you guys have created keep up the good work. Gerrymac
