Propshaft vibration and/or brake binding - how to approch |
|
Hello,
My D3 seems to be going through a phase of "always something wrong" this year..... anyway.....
It had a very odd vibration when driving the other day just as I was coming of the dual carriage way onto the lane home, checked all tyres and it was OK so just filed it to look out for reoccurrence. It didn't do it again until the next time I drove up that same bit of road. It was vibrating until I came to a stop and then was fine again on the slower lanes home. Vibration was form the middle of the car back, the steering was rock solid and fine.
A bit of research pointed to a propshaft bearing so I had a look and yes, the bearing rubber is 50% gone and the propshaft is free to move around a a lot.
When I was doing this diagnosis though and had the car jacked up, I noticed the passenger real wheel was slightly binding and not at all free in comparison to the drivers side. This has sewn seeds of doubt as to if its really the propshaft despite the obvious issue on the bearing (or am I being daft).
In terms of the binding, i suspect maybe a handbrake shoe not releasing, I'm sure i hear slightly limp clicking sound beyond the normal winding noise that's not the usual operation. How can I best check for handbrake issues vs calliper issues? and would a re adjustment of the stuck side be a valid thing to try (as per "brake bible")
So summary;
How to diagnose the break issue?
Part of the questions are that I'm really torn between DIY and local (trusted) garage. I really need a better jack to do this if I diy so its investment and effort vs just pay the money and get it done.
Sorry this is a bit of a ramble, im going round in circles in my head re the plan of attack. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Easy to repair the prop with SikaFlex if its just the centre and not a UJ gone, and if you are getting brake binding issues you should be able to feel the heat coming from one of the wheels more than the others after a bit of a drive around. Must stop buying shiny toys....

This one for Sikaflex?
Feels like an option even if it’s temporary it might diagnose it better. Annoyingly I ordered the bearing/Mount already, but it can sit on the shelf!

Looks like sticking calliper on passenger side rear.
Backed it up 10ft and the rust was wiped off. Drove up the lane and one disk was too hot to hold. Obviously the prop shaft isn't perfect, but Ill do the brakes and then do a test run before I tackle the prop. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2

Good shout... I think many people drive for a long period of time before they even notice that their prop centre bearing is torn, personally I don't think it's likely to be a massive issue if you leave it for a while. New GKN propshafts are about £350 all in I think (I DIY'd mine about 6 months ago).
I think it's fairly unlikely that the prop is the cause of your vibration. Much more likely that replacing the offending caliper will sort your issue completely.

This one is on my radar for a job soon. Uprated centre bearing for the propshaft. I've not researched whether they're any good or not, yet, but will do so before I think about buying one.

Iv sorted the brakes and that was the issue. Ill go back over the bearing with sticky as its not totally gone, so I can probably get years out of it if it sort it now. Disco 3: Lotus Elise S1: Ferguson T20: Audi A2
