Pros and cons of different wheel sizes

Can anyone please throw some light on the advantages and disadvantages of different wheel sizes? (18", 19", 20", etc.) I have spent a couple of hours scanning hundreds of posts in the 'Wheels & Tyres' section of disco3.co.uk, but haven't seen a thread with much info on this - maybe I missed it?

Is it just about aesthetics, or are there other pros and cons (e.g. on-road vs/ off-road performance)? Are there a greater choice of tyres available for certain wheel sizes? Any issues w.r.t. insurance and non-standard wheels? I will drive 95% of the time (or more) on the road, but am thinking ahead to a possible overland trip, and possibly also some off-road driving/green laning. I was therefore thinking about getting some all-terrain tyres, but want to be sure I am happy with the wheel size before spending money on a set of new tyres.

I'm new to the D3, and would be grateful for some advice. The 2005 D3 I have just bought has 19" RR wheels with Pirelli Scorpion 255/55 R19 111V tyres fitted.

Many thanks.

The 19's and 20's look good, although because of the narrow sidewall they are more prone to damage to rim and tyre when used off road. Also, tyre choice is limited on 19's and 20's more so than on 17's and 18's.

18's seem ok, but I have no personal experience of them.

17's are very common, and have some good tyre options. I have used 17's with Cooper STT's and apart from the noise, they are great off road. I have never had a puncture or damage.

On the road,I have standard 19's with GY Wrangler F1 tyres. The 19's give a harder ride, but the handling is Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I bought a set of 17s for off road use, especially if only occasionally off road. You can get wheels for around £25 each from ebay, although some go for a lot more, I got wheels and off road tyres for £350 complete, its just a case of searching.

Initially I ran 18s but they got fairly well scuffed when used for light off road use, which was why I went for a spare set of wheels and a decent trolley jack! Thumbs Up

If you're doing 95% on-road I'd just buy Pirelli ATR's for the 19" you've already got. They're quiet, tough and my last lot lasted close to 40k miles! The fact that 19" look better is just a bonus! Thumbs Up

I just relieved my local Indy of 4 17" with pretty worn Cooper Discoverer A/T's for £30 a corner.......going to put them on over the winter and see what difference they make from my OEM 18" SE rims with Pirelli zeros........
Might even be tempted to venture off the highway in them at some point.....
