I need a comparison check....
I have become aware over the past few weeks of a whirring/droning noise that is directly related to engine speed.
It is most prevalent at low speeds when it is probably the most audible noise the car makes, and is always there, even at idle. I always thought it was the torque converter, but it has started to become more noticable and gets on my nerves a bit now.
By chance, I was sitting traffic with the radio off, and I felt a bit chilly so I hit the OFF button on the air con. Lo and behold the noise completely disappeared! I switched the air con back on by pressing the button again, noise comes back, etc.
Could somebody with an auto HSE rev the engine to 1500-2000 rpm at a standstill, and press the OFF button a few times to see if you have the noise too?
It could be a dodgy air conditioning compressor or clutch, or drive belt, or a pipe vibrating, or a million and one things! But I just want to know if it is just my car or do they all do it.
Cheers in advance.

Tried the test on my D3 HSE with 26.5k miles and no change in sound. Must be the aircon compressor/drive belt.IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

My money is going on the drivebelt, or a tensioner pulley bearing. My car has done a fair bit of wading, and the belt gets the full wet treatment. My old D2 used to eat tensioner pulleys on a regular basis.
Gareth, you didn't post the outcome! And I need to know now!
My A/C system was regassed while I was at work today and I noticed exactly these symptoms on the way home.
Now that could be because the regassing did something to the system, or it could be because some bastard nicked my ipod

The dealer overgassed my A/C and it was noisy then switched itself off.
The gas overheats and the safety switches it off.
The gas bottle wasn't on the scale properly.
Just get the dealer to redo the gas. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Mine was off the road for a week waiting for parts for this to be fixed. Had a new air con compressor as the bearing had gone on the compressor itself. Think cost would have been fairly high
As with you, gradually aware of noise, got to the point where unless I was doing 40+mph it was the loudest noise audible in the car."To finish first, one first has to finish ...."
As it happens, I was there all through the operation. I saw the scale time out and turn off twice, and by my calculations the guy put about 70g too much in. (tolerance is 25g either side of 550g).
