Tailgate wont open - lock/unlock buttons work - switch repla
Hi, I have a variation on the tailgate wont open issue.
1. Tailgate would not open using the rubber switch on the handle (no noise at all)
2. Pressing the Lock Unlock buttons releases the tailgate, so actuator is good
3. I suspected the handle switch which I have replaced and connected to the old wires in the handle
4. Nothing has changed and still the tailgate wont unlatch (no noise)
Any ideas where I should look next?
Thanks

Hi yattalunga - as you have replaced the handle switch, try to get a voltage reading from the old wires. Maybe the problem is further away than at the switch itself. Especially as you said that the pressing of Lock/Unlock combination activates the actuator and the tailgate is able to be opened.
Failing that I don't have any more suggestions other than I doused my switch with Lanotec after I experienced some moisture inside under the rubber seal about 4 years ago. No problems since.

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Did you get this sorted? I have the same issue. Replaced the actuator and switch but nothing.

I don't think that's my issue. I have new actuator, new switch, voltage coming in and out at switch loom, I can see voltage change when switch engaged, picture on dash/warning thinks tailgate is open, no voltage reading at actuator when switch engaged. I checked what grounds I could find but everything seems fine, did a battery reset (disconnecting and wiring across ground and positive wire). My worry is its relay related and that is beyond my skills. Might need a trip to the dealer.

Hi kerry_daniel. Still trying to track the loom back from the switch. Not much infirnation about on the location of each connector.

I have started checking the wiring and tracing the route it takes. I can see voltage coming in to the handle/switch for the uppertailgaterelease, I can monitor the switch opening and closing (actuator doesn't respond), no voltage at the actuator can be seen (I have run power across it and it works). One thing that confuses me is the dash warning for open tailgate comes on when pulling the handle but the computer will recognise that it isn't and the light will go off after a while. The switch in the lower tailgate is new and when I unplug it the dash light will not go out after a while.
Back at the fuse panel I swapped relay 2 and relay 4 around given the lower tailgate works fine, no change in status back at the actuator.
I am guessing my next step is to start to look at continuity and voltage going in to the CJB from the uppertailgate switch and where it enters the relay.
I am also seeing chatter online about the driver side door lock playing a role in this circuit. That lock was replaced a few months ago and it seems to operate normally and the computer recognises when its open or closed so I don't know if there is a ground issue in there.
This will keep me busy while I wait form my service appointment.
Any thoughts?
Update 24/01/17 - thought I'd update this following the outcome. The tailgate now opens, no idea why it started working. Replaced all components and switches at the back, traced all wires, messed around with all relays, reset batteries, cursed a lot, gave up on it, just for added pleasure my compressor then died, took it in to get replaced, disco came back and tailgate worked. Land Rover said they didn't touch it. Cursed some more.

Hi,
I would try running a wire direct from a good ground to the live wire on the switch for a moment to check that it is not a problem with the ground off the tailgate switch or do a continuity test on the switch ground

Hi all I am going to check the wires for power today on the uppertailgate switch hopefully I find something I've been trying to watch videos all night but all I seem to find is how to fix lower hatch but I have already changed the actuator on that..

Interesting- I have the same problem. Last year replaced actuator and switch all worked fine until last week. Just tried another new switch and no joy. Tailgate still opens on double buttons pushed together on dash and did work on key third button until it unprogrammed itself
Any other ideas welcome

For what its worth - mine has the same rear uppertailgate stopped working issue, it only worked when pushing the 2 buttons on the dashboard.... i bought a replacement switch/actuator for £20 but it still didnt work.
I then took it to the dealer that had it for a few days and traced it to a wire issue near driver footwell, however they say the replacement actuator i bought still isnt working but are confident they think another one will. Hope to find out in a few days.

Did you get your issue resolved? If so what was the fault?
