Simple question many posts so far is there a clear answer?
Hi one and all. New to the site but have read some of the threads. Driving an '05 Disco 3 with 18" wheels.
I have Pirelli zeros on that came with the car and need a new set. Is there a final clear answer for an overall best tyre for mainly road use but great grip in wet and snow without the dreaded road noise and early tyre wear?
It looks to me from other threads that the two clear options are Pirelli ATRs and General ATs? Is this correct and when you add in cost and fuel consumption is there a clear favourite for the crown?

I run General Grabbers on my 20" 'summer' wheels and ATRs on the 19 HSE standard wheels which I put on through winter (mainly to save the cosmetics of the 20s). Obvously it's a wider wheel on the 20's.
I put the 19s back on today and so far haven't noticed any real difference, I had the 19s with ATRs on through ast years snow and they were fautless. From my experience I'd say the Grabbers are a more road biased ATR than the Pirelli ATRs. The Grabbers have a directional tread patter and probably offer a bit more grip in the wet and dry when you are pushign it, but again they're a wider fitment.
Essentially I don't think you can go wrong on either, Pirelli ATRs seen to wear a bit better in my experience, no impact on fuel or road noise with either. I think I's let the price make the decision between those two Errr, ummm, maybe...oh bo**ocks, just do it !

Forgot to say I run ATRs on SWMBO's D3 in winter, were great in the light dusting of snow we had in the Heelands last winter!! Also just been with 2 ATR shod D3s in Tunisia and they were fantastic on that trip, had no issues whatsoever, those if us on road tyres had a handful of punctures between us. No-one had AT2s this year but they had big time puncture problems last year with them. ATRs more expensive but better on punctures, no increase in noise or fuel use and last 40k miles. AT2s cheaper but noisier, use more fuel and very vulnerable to sidwall punctures, don't know what longevity is. Few peeps have commented that the ATRs dont look as macho as AT2s but as long as they do their job I dont mind driving on girly looking tyres. As I said pays yer money etc.

Sounds like it's ATRs for me then. Anyone know where the best deals are to be had? I'm based in SE London area? What does a set of ATRs go for at present?

Don't know about current prices but I got mine of 'Ken' who frequents the site and generally has a good deal up his sleeve, think he's London way too, alternative would be AJS (also on the site), never dealt with them but only heard good things Errr, ummm, maybe...oh bo**ocks, just do it !

19" Pirelli ATR's cheaper than the new GG AT's at Protyre (see the recent ATR Hens Teeth thread).
Glad to hear that the ATR performed well in Tunisia again. IMO it's a great All Terrain tyre with exceptional road manners. I hope the new General Grabber AT will be as good or better, but it's still early days.

They did fandabiedozie on the trip, if I hadn't had so many 17" Contis to use up I'd have used my wife's ATRs.

Which tyres did you go for in the end? I face exactly the same dilemma as you right now (for my D3 - only had it a week) and want to make sure that I go for the correct tryes. Currently leaning towards Pirell Scorpion, but not sure which to go for - ATR, STR, or ZERO.

Hi Jon,
Haven't tracked down Ken yet but I intend to go for the Pirelli ATR. Have Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on at present but I understand they aren't quite as good in snow etc and they definitely wear out very fast with some people saying they aren't getting much more than 10000 miles! ATRs should give up to 40000 or so.

ATRs in the snow

They were excellent in the snow, including driving through 8" of ploughed snow at the side of the road to park up near here. Was very pleased, just took them off too early!! Now they'll be on til May!!
