Sidewall strength and tyre rubbing

Are BF Goodrich AT's the all terrains to go for if I'm looking for sidewall strength? I seem to have bad luck with sidewalls. All the punctures I had with the Coopers on my Defender (4 punctures before I switched to BF Goodrich) were in the sidewall. With the BF Goodrich tyres... only 1 puncture with a nail in the tread. So I'm kinda in favour of the BFGs. Unfortunately BF Goodrich only seem to make 245/75R17 and 265/70R17 for the D3's 17" wheels, both of which are the same diameter, so I guess both of which rub.

How bad is the rubbing? I'm mostly concerned about rubbing on full lock since I do quite a lot of that. Also are there any "workarounds"? Trimming, grinding, bending, tying, anything? Mine's a 2006 so from what I gather on this forum it's not as bad as the later models.

What is the exact wheel diameters for each size? From that I can give you an idea.

I've run BFG 265/70 R17 A/Ts for years on my D3 with minimal rubbing. Go for them. (You will have to deflate the spare, though.)

Best Wishes,

Roveribis, the BF Goodrich site says 31.6 inches for the 245/75 R17 and 31.8 inches for the 265/70 R 17 so really practically the same.

Bushwanderer, I don't have many options except to go for it, since I'm reluctant to move away from the sidewall strength BF Goodrich tyres offer Smile. I'm not sure if any other manufacturer produces an all terrain with such strength (maybe Mickey Thompson?). I'm aware I'll have to deflate the spare. That won't be a problem since I carry a compressor.

I have used both the 245/75/R17 and the 265/70/R17. Minor rubbing during off roading. Got more than 95000km on the 245s and still had 7mm tread left when I sold the car.

I moved to the BF AT because I'd popped two sidewalls on other makes.

I run 265/70/17 on my 05MY without any rubbing - even off road - so I think they'd be worth a go for you.

I don't deflate my spare at all - I hang it on the rear wheel carrier........ Laughing

Only thing to worry about is the envious looks from people without a D3 and BFGs. Thumbs Up
