Transmission thump
Hi can anyone shed some light on a new sound effect?
Now when I put the transmission into drive (it's an auto) I get a thump it's as if the 'slack' is taken up, this has only appeared in the last week or two, 70k on it and no heavy towing.
It only thumps when drive is engaged it doesn't do it when it's put into reverse.
Does the transmission have a rubber donut or similar?
Any suggestions where to start looking?

There is a centre mount, the bearing is suspended in rubber, perhaps that bond is broken, there have been cases of it reported here.
It can be glued again using something like Tiger Seal. There are suppliers for this mount but not very nice to do and haven't been impressed with the quality of the part, or it's a new prop from LRPaul Redding

Similar here, mine also does an F if you select reverse quickly I.e it seems surprised!
Even after a transmission flush the thump returned after 2 days. It is mostly when my gearbox is cold. I am interested to hear your replies so I can relate to my issue Captain Nick Medhurst would ask:
"What is the first rule when overlanding?"
I would Reply:
"Duratrac"

Well it's an investigation for the weekend I guess, had a quick look but I'll need to get the heat shields off to get proper access.
I'll get a tube of tiger seal just in case...

Well the slack/ thump seems to be the transfer box, i don't know what is a normal amount of backlash so its difficult to say if this is good or bad.
How much slack is normal in the transfer box?

Could it be a slack chain in the transfer box ? Last night I lay in bed looking up at the stars in the sky and I thought to myself, where,s the f**king ceiling!!

Was under mine the other night. No rotational movement in the prop shaft, and no movement in the UJs (check those 1st by the way).
About 1-2mm of forwards/backwards movement in prop.
Hope this helps.

Fixed?
Markmein - Did you ever get this sorted? This is very similar to the problems I am having at the moment.
