Rear locking differential
Hi,
How do I check if my discovery 3 hse(2008) has rear locking diffs or not ?
Is it optional ?
and is it necessary for snowy conditions ?

Easiest is to look at the rear diff its self.
If its fitted it looks like this
It was a option.
Not necessary for snow, but a great help if its fitted.

Also, if you put the 4x4 info centre up on the screen showing the wheels, chassis and two diffs, that if you select Rock Crawl this locks the diffs up.
It should show as an orange locked padlock symbol on the screen.ATB

What Difference would looking Diffs make to a vechicle when using it off road?
Sorry if its a stupid question.

You probably get to the same places without a rear axle locking diff then with one as you have traction control, but you get there with less wheelspin.
The automatic diff locks when the ECU think it is neccesary and makes sure the rear tyres have the same speed and so give the torque to the wheel that can get it to the ground. So it prevents wheelspin.
Traction control only comes in action if there is wheelspin and then uses the brakes to slow down the spinning wheel.Roel

so it locks both diffs up ?
so both of them will be orange/red ?

All right I have another question.
Do I have to be in low range for the rear diff to lock itself when necessary ?
For e.g, if I'm on grass/gravel/snow and the road is snowy/icy, and I'm not on low range mode, will the rear diff still be able to lock ?

I believe it only does this in rock crawl mode in anticipation, in the other modes, i think it only locks if and when required. I'm one of the lesser mortals without the E Diff.
They will show up in the orange colour when diff/s are locked.ATB

Sticking it in rock crawl won't automatically lock the diff's up it just gets them ready so don't expect to stick it in rock crawl and see both or even one diff go orange. You realy want to get it cross axeled to see them both come on. Although if you only have the centre locking diff then you won't see the rear come on
Best way is to take a look at it. It can be retrofitted at well if you know what you're doing (which I don't).D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Yes it can lock both diffs up, but it will it independent.
Here is a picture stolen from Wiggs album
You can see both diffs locked.
Most off the time it will lock the centre diff first but I have also noticed in GGS (grass gravel snow mode) that it can lock the rear axle up while leaving the centre diff open. This happened when driving on a street with on one side ice and the other side clean. When accelerating and decellerating the rear diff locked but the centre diff stayed open. It was repeatable. Stu, I thought the rear locking diff could not be retro fitted due the the electronics of the car. If it can, where is the info on it as I had a rear locking diff offered to me a while back. I didn't accept as I'm sure I read on here it couldn't be doneCurrent: D3 commercial

It can be retrofitted and mechanical it isn't a problem, but then there are the elctronics. You need the special loom that has to be spliced in the existing loom and you need an ECU and then you have to tell the other ECU's that it is there.
So it is possible but if you can't do it yourselves, try to find a D3 that has it.Roel

I believed that it couldn't be done until recently, but one of the members has done it (first one that I've heard of) and written up an article about it. It cost him about £600 in total ISTR. I think sourcing all the bits was probably the hardest thing (for him). He has a faultmate so was able to tell the car it had the locking diff without too much of a problem. I think the loom was probably the biggest issue (i.e. finding the bits and fitting it).D3 HSE MY05 Auto
