So, I appear to have knackered my spare tyre 'winch' under the car.
I had to take off the spare - then realised the car had been sold with the wrong size wheel. As a result I left it in the boot whilst I sought out one the right size.
I wound the wire up until it stopped against the car - not too tight.
However, now I have the tyre / rim sorted I cannot get the wire to come back down more than about 5 inches - even if someone else winds the nut anti-clockwise and I pull on the wire.
I'm stuck. Can anyone suggest how to fix this? Do I have to take the whole mechanism off?
Thanks in advance.

I got mine out by levering out the cable whilst carefully unwinding .

It needs weight on it to unwind. Get some one to pull whilst you wind.
Ste e You remind me of a younger me, not much younger mind...perhaps even a little older!

Thanks both. I also found this in the forum if anyone else is struggling:

Basically the lesson is that if you have to remove the spare and are not putting it straight back then DON"T wind the cable back in, instead zip-tie it to something, as it needs weight to retract properly.
